NOTES: ARITHMETIC SEQUENCES & SERIES APPLICATIONS

When solving word problems:

First, decide if you’re looking for a specific term in your sequence, or if you need to find the
sum. It may also help to identify what’s given. Then use the formulas below to help!

The general term of an arithmetic sequence is given by the formula

an = a1 + (n - 1)d

Tips for Finding the sum of a given arithmetic sequence:

1. Identify a1, n, and an for the sequence.

2. If an, a1, or n is not given, Find it using an = a1 + (n - 1)d.

n
3. Substitute and evaluate: S n = ( a1 + an )
