1.
Plasterboard:
Plasterboard is a popular building product used to construct ceilings and interior walls. Plasterboard
was introduced to Australia in the 1940's and is commonly also known as drywall, gypsum board and
Gyprock. Standard plasterboard is made by sandwiching a layer of gypsum plaster between two thick
sheets of paper.

2.
Paint:
The Australian Standard AS/NZS 2311:2017 Guide to the painting of buildings is the
recognized industry standard for the painting industry. All work performed by a licensed or
qualified painter should meet this standard.
Here is a summary of some of the key points from the standard:

 Three coats must be applied to any bare plaster or timber surface

 When paint is applied by spray to a plasterboard surface, the first and last coat must
be 'back-rolled'; ie. it must have a roller finish.

3.
Gyprock plasterboard:
Gyprock plasterboard is used as an internal lining board to provide smooth, strong, long-
lasting walls and ceilings for homes, offices, hospitals, hostels for the aged, schools, shops
and factories. Its durable surface will accept most types of decorative finishing, including
paint, wallpaper and texture compounds. Joints between Gyprock plasterboard sheets are
reinforced and concealed to provide a smooth, durable finish to the whole surface.
Alternatively, the joints may be covered with a decorative moulding. Standard Gyprock
plasterboard or Gyprock Aquachek can be used for exterior ceilings and eaves lining,
provided the ceilings are protected from the weather.

4.
Different types of plasterboard:
Wall Board which is suitable for most applications where normal sound levels, structural
properties and fire specifications are found. Normal wallboard can be fixed at a double
thickness to give greater assistance with fire and sound levels. It is usual to plaster onto the
ivory face of the board and decorate directly onto the brown face but it makes no real
difference which way round the board is fixed.

Vapour Barrier or Vapour Check Plasterboard which has a thin metallic film on the
reverse of the sheet. This film stops warm vapours passing through the board which could
lead to condensation when they passed through to a colder surface. Commonly used when
dry lining a building to keep it warm and well insulated.

Sound Reduction or Acoustic Plasterboard which has a higher density core providing a
good level of sound insulation. It is effective on thin walls and ceilings making it very useful
in blocks of flats. It is most often used in conjunction with mineral wool and various sound
proofing fixing methods such as resilient bars which keep the surface of the board slightly
away from the surface they are on to prevent the passage of sound vibrations.

Fire Board which has glass fibre and other additives in the core to protect against fire in
most domestic situations. Usually fire resistant plasterboard comes with a pink face which
can be painted or plastered.

5.
Process of installing plasterboard:
Hang the plasterboard on the wall. Place the bottom sheet up against the wall, sitting on the
offcut chocks so it is slightly off the floor. Nail it into place on every stud, top and bottom.
Now repeat the process for each row of sheeting as you work up the wall – daub on the stud
adhesive, and nail the sheet in place.

Different fixing:

7.
Store plasterboard:
All materials must be kept dry, preferably by being stored inside the building. Care should be
taken to avoid sagging or damage to edges, ends and surfaces. All plasterboard should be
stacked flat, properly supported on a level platform or on support members which extend the
full width of the sheets and which are spaced at maximum 600mm centres. If stored outside,
sheets are to be stored off the ground, stacked as previously detailed and protected from the
weather. Buildings should be sealed against water ingress before plasterboard is installed. It
is recommended that plasterboard damaged by water is rejected or replaced.

8.
Environmental impacts of plasterboard and correct
disposal:
The main environmental impacts associated with plasterboard result from the production
process, transportation and disposal. Efforts directed by government currently concentrate
on reducing the quantity of plasterboard being diverted from landfill to be recycled. By
recycling plasterboard this diverts usable waste from landfill, it can reduce landfill and
waste transportation costs and helps protect natural resources, by reducing the demand for
gypsum – a naturally occurring but finite mineral.

9.
Approximate costs per square metre for material:
Most plasterers give a quote based on the square meters of wall ... hourly rate as this price
can vary with travel costs, material costs and ... and installation can cost anywhere from $20
to $30 per meter. For example, to supply and install plasterboard in three average sized
rooms it will cost around $15,000.

10.
Different types of paints:
Most paints fall into one of the general categories of eggshell, semi-gloss, flat or gloss. You
may also need to apply primer or first coat, depending on the surface being painted. These
basic paints will answer most of your needs but it is worth looking for formulas that will

perform better in specific situations. Always apply paint as recommended by the
manufacturer.

11.
Benefits from using your paint choices:
The best paint colors to make your long and stressful day seem less overwhelming and
ultimately change your life for the better.

12.
Technique of painting:
 Clear the area of any furniture to give ample working space.

 Lay down a drop sheet and clean walls with sugar soap. it may be tempted to skip this
step; however a clean surface is best insurance against a ruined paint job.

 Mask trim for cutting-in. Cutting-in is a technique whereby paint with a brush or application
pad, the areas that can’t be reached with a roller.

 Load brush by dipping it into the paint roughly half the length of the bristles. Tap the brush
on the side of the paint pot to remove the excess. Start brushing a few centimeters from the
corner or edge. As move the brush, you will establish the line of the edge of the paint. Drag
the brush in to the edge so that the line on the paint follows the edging.

 Now ready to roll out the wall. To load roller push it forward on the tray then lift it to see if it
spins evenly. If your roller is unbalanced, it’s because the paint isn’t evenly applied, so
continue rolling it over the tray with full rotations to spread the paint evenly.

 Start from where you cut in and roll across the wall. For best results, roll as far into the
brushed area as possible.

 After you have covered a section of the wall, it’s time to lay-off to get a smooth
finish. This is arguably the most important step in rolling a wall and should be done
when you’ve painted a section roughly 3-4 meters. Laying-off your wall means giving
it a smooth consistent finish and hiding those streaky brush strokes. Simply place
your unloaded roller at the top left corner of your wall. Ensure the handle side of your
roller is to the right. Then with almost zero pressure roll straight down your wall until
you reach the bottom. Remove your roller, return to the top, and slightly overlap
where you just rolled so that each panel rubs away the line from the previous lay-off.
13.
VOC and Natural Paint:
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic chemicals that have a high vapor pressure
at ordinary room temperature. Their high vapor pressure results from a low boiling point,
which causes large numbers of molecules to evaporate or sublimate from the liquid or solid
form of the compound and enter the surrounding air, a trait known as volatility. For example,
formaldehyde, which evaporates from paint and releases from materials like quartz, has a
boiling point of only –19 °C (–2 °F).
Natural paints are paints that are made with raw ingredients such as clay, chalk, marble, and
earth and mineral pigments and that are not produced with petrochemical (oil-derived) or
synthetic ingredients.

14.
Approximate costs per litre:
Expect to pay between $15 and $30 per gallon of paint, and it will need 2-3 gallons for an
average-sized bedroom (with some left over for contingencies and touch-ups)
