1 Introduction
The Carbide.ui Theme Edition Nokia N97 Plug-in provides theme developers with support for the latest
S60 5th Edition theme components, such as those for the new home screen, and theme elements
specific to the Nokia N97 mobile computer. This document describes the new or updated components
delivered by the plug-in, how to install the plug-in and its package compiler, and known issues with
the components.

2 What’s new in the Carbide.ui Theme Edition Nokia N97 Plug-in

The new Nokia N97 plug-in contains additional or updated theme components and previews for:
• The new S60 home screen, available first on the Nokia N97 mobile computer. Previews of the
home screen are available in landscape and portrait orientations.
• Thirty two new home-screen-specific application icons.
• A preview screen for Music Player 4, available in portrait orientation.
• 149 Nokia N97 mobile computer specific icons.

3 Installation
The installation of the Nokia N97 plug-in needs to be accompanied with the installation of the
Carbide.ui 3.4 Theme Edition Compilers to ensure theme packages can be built correctly. The process
of installing these components is described in this section.

3.1 Installing the Nokia N97 plug-in

Plug-ins are managed within Carbide.ui as part of the tool’s preferences. To access Carbide.ui’s plug-in
management feature from the Carbide.ui menu, select Windows > Preferences. From the Preferences
tree, select Plug-in Management, which opens the window shown in Figure 1.

To add the plug-in, click Add. The Install Plug-in window will open, as shown in Figure 2.

Click Browse to select the Nokia N97 plug-in, downloaded from Forum Nokia, using the Windows
Open file browser, as shown in Figure 3.

Once the Nokia N97 plug-in file has been selected, details of the content of the plug-in will be
provided, as shown in Figure 4.

The Nokia N97 plug-in is installed by clicking Install. Once installed, the plug-in will be listed in the
Installed plug-ins list in the Plug-in Management window, as shown in Figure 5.

3.2 Installing the Carbide.ui 3.4 Theme Edition compilers

Note: These installation and usage instructions are based on Microsoft Windows Vista. The same
processes can be followed for Carbide.ui 3.4 Theme Edition installed on Windows XP, however the
Windows menus and dialogues seen will differ slightly.

Carbide.ui stores the compilers for creating a theme’s SIS file in the
C:\Program Files\Nokia\Carbide.ui Theme Edition 3.4\Eclipse\plugins\com.
nokia.tools.packaging_3.4.0.0\runtime\win32 folder (where the default installation
location of C:\Program Files\Nokia\Carbide.ui Theme Edition 3.4 was used
during installation).

The new compilers are supplied in a ZIP archive that is designed to install them into the correct folder,
regardless of the location in which Carbide.ui is installed.

To install the compilers (in a standard Windows installation, without third-party zip software
installed) locate the downloaded ZIP file, right-click the file to open its shortcut menu, and click
Extract All, as shown in Figure 5.

In the Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders dialogue, see Figure 6, click Browse and open the folder
in which Carbide.ui 3.4 Theme Edition is installed. If the default installation directory was chosen
during installation of Carbide.ui, the appropriate folder is
C:\Program Files\Nokia\Carbide.ui Theme Edition 3.4. Once the folder has been
selected, click Extract.

You will now receive a warning, see Figure 7, informing you that the folders in the ZIP files already
exist and that you can merge the content of these folders. Click Yes.

If you are running Windows Vista, you will receive a warning that you need to provide administrator
permission to copy these files, see Figure 8. Click Continue.

In the User Account Control dialogue, click Continue.

The folders and files in the ZIP file are now extracted. Open the folder
C:\Program Files\Nokia\Carbide.ui Theme Edition 3.4\Eclipse\plugins\com.
nokia.tools.packaging_3.4.0.0\runtime\win32 where the three new folders containing
the compilers can be seen, see Figure 9. In addition, another new folder contains the guide to
installing and using the compilers.

If you plan to create themes for platforms or devices other than the Nokia N97 device, there will be a
requirement to regularly access the win32 folder. It is therefore recommended that you add a
shortcut to this folder to your desktop. To do this, open the
C:\Program Files\Nokia\Carbide.ui Theme Edition 3.4\Eclipse\plugins\com.
nokia.tools.packaging_3.4.0.0\runtime folder and right-click the win32 folder to open
its shortcut menu, as shown in Figure 10. In the shortcut menu select Create Shortcut.

The Shortcut dialogue, see Figure 11, now gives you the option to add the shortcut to your desktop.
Click Yes.

You will now see the shortcut, shown in Figure 12, on your desktop.

3.3 Installing the Nokia N97 plug-in’s compiler

To enable the correct packaging of themes created with the Nokia N97 plug-in you need to ensure its
compiler is in the
C:\Program Files\Nokia\Carbide.ui Theme Edition 3.4\Eclipse\plugins\com.
nokia.tools.packaging_3.4.0.0\runtime\win32 folder.

Before setting up the correct compiler ensure Carbide.ui is closed, remembering to save your
work first.

You now need to select the S60_32_AknSkinDescCompiler.exe from the

Nokia_N97_Plugin_Compiler folder and copy it to the win32 folder, overwriting the existing
file. The easiest way to do this is by right-clicking, dragging, and dropping the file into the win32
folder, as shown in Figure 13.

When you drop the file a shortcut menu, see Figure 14, will provide a number of options. Select
Copy Here.

Now a dialogue will ask you to select a copy action, see Figure 15. Click Copy and Replace to update
the compiler.

The correct compiler is now in place and you can restart Carbide.ui and package your themes created
with the Nokia N97 plug-in in the usual way.

If you want to compile themes for S60 3rd Edition devices or other S60 5th Edition devices you will
need to update the compiler file, the procedure and information on identifying the correct compiler
files are provided in the Carbide.ui Theme Edition Compilers: Installation and User Guide, which is
included in the compiler download.

4 Accessing the new Nokia N97 plug-in features

The Nokia N97 plug-in adds a platform to those available for S60 themes. The features of the new
plug-in can be accessed from any theme created after the plug-in was installed, by selecting the plug-
in from the platform drop-down menu on the Carbide.ui toolbar, as shown in Figure 16.

Note: New plug-ins are not available for use in themes created prior to the plug-in’s installation.
However, a new plug-in will be made available for use in an existing theme, if the theme is open while
the plug-in is being installed.

Once the Nokia N97 plug-in has been selected, a theme using its features can be edited in the
usual way.

5 Known Issues
The following issues have been identified with the Nokia N97 plug-in:
• None of the new icons and colour elements display platform information in their properties pane.
• In Window > Preferences > Carbide.ui under the Series 60 tab, which appears under the
Appearance tab, the home screen and Music Player 4 preview screens are not listed, so they
cannot be included in the list of default previews.
• The Vertical Slider Bar and Horizontal Slider Bar (from the resource Indicators > Slide
Indicators) are not shown with their base graphics in the component pane.
• The Equalizer, Home Screen, Messaging Editor, Settings Volume, and Calculator preview screens do
not exactly match with the layout seen on a Nokia N97 mobile computer.
• The three resource sub-groups High Resolution Volume – Small, High Resolution Volume –
Large, and Vertical Small Volume On – Active Indications under the resources Indicator >
Volume indicators have their descriptions trimmed in the Resources pane.
• In the component view, some of the 3-piece elements under the resource sub-groups Vertical
Scroll Bar and Horizontal Scroll Bar (found in the resources Scroll Bars and Lines > Scroll Bars) do
not display skinning information correctly. However, on a device the information is
rendered correctly.
