INQUIRIES, INVESTIGATION AND IMMERSION

TOPIC: RESEARCHABLE QUESTIONS

NAMES: HAZEL AIRA CORDOVEZ & RENZO CASTAÑEDA

TEACHER: MR. REYES

I. Introduction
Both professional researchers and successful student researchers
develop research questions. That’s because research questions are
more than handy tools, they are essential to the research process.
By defining exactly what the researcher is trying to find out, these
questions influence most of the rest of the steps taken to conduct
the research. That’s true even if the research is not for academic
purposes but for other areas of our lives. Interest in a particular
topic usually begins the research process, but it is the familiarity
with the subject that helps define an appropriate research question
for a study. The purpose of researchable questions is to answer a
specific concern or issue.
II. Body of the Report
A researchable research question is one that can generate a
hypothesis that can be tested through a structured and rigorous
process of data collection, analysis and testing, either quantitatively,
or qualitatively, or a hybrid of methods. A research question is a
question that your research study/project sets out to answer. Often
you have not only one but a set of between at least 7 related
questions that you want to answer. These questions are important
since they are the focus of your research; answering your questions
is THE main aim of your study or thesis and “everything else follows
from them”. Thus, the research questions must be accurately and

clearly defined. It is the initial step in a research project. The 'initial

step' means after you have an idea of what you want to study, the
research question is the first active step in the research project. The
research question is the uncertainty concerning something in the
population which the researcher wishes to deal with by making
measurements on his/her study subjects. There is no shortage of
questions. Even as we succeed in providing good answers to some
questions, we remain surrounded by others. In doing research
questions it must not too broad or too narrow, it just a clear, focused
and appropriate complex in other term it must specific in doing
research questions.

ons we have two types of questions, the researchable and non-

researchable questions.
A non-researchable research question is therefore one that is not
formulated to enable a testable hypothesis to be generated. This
does not mean that the topic is not capable of sustaining research.
Often it is a matter of recasting the question so that specific testable
hypotheses can be formulated. Non-researchable questions could
be too broad or vague, or they could be questions for which
answers are easily obtainable.
Example of Researchable Questions
*If people with disabilities require accessibility options to fully
experience television, will this group benefit from the introduction of
video on demand in Australia, if it is not subject to the same access
requirements of broadcast television?
Sub-questions/ areas of focus
1. Identify what Australian consumers with disabilities want from
VOD and investigate how they currently use it
2. Determine which accessibility features would most benefit this
group
3. Evaluate VOD in Australia against existing legislation and W3C
recommendations
4. Compare access features on current and emerging Australian
VOD with international offerings netflix in the US and Amazon
Prime in UK.
Other Examples
* Do children enrolled in preschool develop better social skills than
children not enrolled?
* At which age is it better to introduce phonics to children age 5,
age 6, or age 7?
* Who commits more crimes poor people or rich people?

III. Conclusion
The development of the research question is the most important
aspect of a research project. A research project can fail if the
objectives and hypothesis are poorly focused and underdeveloped.
Designing and developing an appropriate and relevant research
question, hypothesis and objectives can be a difficult task. The
critical appraisal of the research question used in a study is vital to
the application of the findings to clinical practice. Focusing
resources, time and dedication to these is very important tasks will
help to guide a successful research project, influence interpretation
of the results and affect future publication efforts. Ensure that the
researchable question is answerable by feasible and clinically
relevant. In doing and developing researchable research questions
use the FINER criteria in the development of the researchable
research questions. Be specific and relevant in making
researchable questions.
