TYPES OF FANS

Fan are identified by two general groups:1.

Centrifugal, in which the air flows radially thru theimpeller. Centrifugal fans are
classifiedaccording to wheel blading ; forward curved, backwardcurved and radial
(straight).2.

Axial flow, in which the air flows axially thru theimpeller. Axial flow fans are
classified aspropeller (disc), tubeaxial and vaneaxial.
Figures 1, 2a, 2b and 2 c show the various typesof commonly applied fans
.
APPLICATION
When a duct system is needed in an air conditioningapplication, a tubeaxial,
vaneaxial or centrifugal fan maybe used. Where there is no duct system and
littleresistance to air flow, a propeller fan can be applied. However, self
contained equipment often utilizescentrifugal fans for applications without
ductwork. The centrifugal fan is used in most comfortapplications because of its
wide range of quiet, efficientoperation at comparatively high pressures. In
addition, the centrifugal fan inlet can be readily attached to anapparatus of large
cross section while the discharge iseasily connected to relatively small ducts.
Air flow can bevaried to match air distribution system requirements bysimple
adjustments to the fan drive or control devices
