"Tractor Pull" is played at a near break-neck speed,
filled with hammer ons from nowhere (See the
articulations appendix) and rapid strumming.
Precussive techniques of kick drum, rim shot,
chunks/whunk damps are used extensively. It is
essential to start slowly and get the groove of the
song down perfectly before increasing your tempo.

The left hand plays over the top of the guitar neck for
the entire song.

There are variations in bars 6 and 17 that are

notated in ossia measures. These should be played
the second time through the repeat.
The tuning is CGDggd tuned one step lower than concert pitch.

"Tractor Pull" was released on Preston's album Handwritten Notes, released in 2000 on his Outer Bridge label.
The transcription here represents the way he currently performs the song. Numerous videos can be found on
the internet showing Preston playing the tune. These videos can be used as support material as individual
notes and phrases may have evolved over the ten years Preston has been performing the tune.

NOTE 1: In this short connecting drum groove, the right hand does a kick drum and rim shot followed by a
"chunk". The chunk figure is a downstrum on the dampened strings with the right hand fingers. This is followed
by a quick upstroke with the right hand thumb.

NOTE 2: This figure is similar to that in Note 1 where the chunk played with the right hand fingers is followed
by an upstroke with the right hand thumb.

NOTE 3: This interesting technique consists of strums with the right hand while hammer ons from nowhere are
excuted on the first beat with the left hand. While strings 1, 2, and 3 are up-strummed on the first beat, strings
4, 5, and 6 are hammered on from nowhere with the left hand index and second finger. Also note the early
change at the end of the next measure, done in a similar manner.

NOTE 4: Notice that this measure is the variation shown in the ossia measures for bar 17.

NOTE 5: This ossia measure is played only on the last time through before going to the Coda. The downstrum
is a forceful strum.

NOTE 6: The barre is held with the left hand index and second fingers while the 5th and 6th strings are
dampened.

NOTE 7: These up-strums are done with the right hand ring finger.

NOTE 8: See notes 1 and 2.

NOTE 9: Down strum all six open strings with a powerful strum and then immediately dampen them all.

Tablature represents the six strings of the guitar. Notes and chords are indicated by the placement of a number on a given
string. The following entries illustrate articulations and competencies required in playing Preston’s music.

The strings are represented with the high string at the top and the low string at the bottom. This is important to note when
interpreting the strum symbols: remember that on a tablature staff, the strum indicates which direction (up or down) is to be
taken from the high string to the low or vice-versa. If the arrow is pointing up, it’s a down stroke, if the arrow is pointing down,
it’s an up stroke.

Another important rhythmic and sonic technique used by Preston is the “whunk-damp” strum. In this technique, you strum
across all the strings with back of your right hand nails and damp the bass strings with the palm, letting the high strings ring.
Preston opens his fingers when strumming down and uses his thumbnail when coming back up. This technique is
significantly represented in this collection in the piece, “Ladies Night.”
