● Attached Powerpoint
● Mathaid Worksheet (CT provided)

Preparation:
● Have chart and worksheet printed out
● Have powerpoint and kahoot loaded

Intro:
● Ask students what they remember about the U.S. customary measurements vs the
metric system
● Tell students we are talking about centimeters and meters today
● Use powerpoint to introduce these two terms
○ Compare cm to inch
■ 1 inch = 2 ½ cm
■ Inch is about the length of one knuckle on a thumb vs. cm is about the
size of pinky finger nail
○ Cm also begin with “cent” which means 100, like with cents in money,
centipedes, and century
○ Compare meter to yard
■ Meter is about 3 in longer than a yard (almost the same size)

Procedure:
● Show students how to measure with a meter stick and a ruler (using the cm side instead
of the inch)
● Introduce the measurement chart to them and pass it out
● Talk about what an estimate is and have them estimate how many cm or meters an
object might be; write these estimates in the chart
○ As you make estimates show students each object around the room so that they
understand where to find everything and what everything is
● Allow students to get up and find the items on the chart
○ Have them measure these items and put their measurements in the chart
● After students finish their measurements, have them come back to their seats
○ If some students finish earlier than others, allow them to begin working on their
worksheet individually at their desk
● Go over the measurements with the students and talk about the chart
○ Could they have measured some things with the meter stick/cm ruler instead?
○ Why did we use the type of measurement that we did?
■ Ex. why measure the tiny circle magnet in cm rather than meters
○ Would any of the other ways to measure have been better for these objects than
the ones we used?
■ Ex. inch, foot, yard, mile, etc...
● Have students put their chart to the side and go to get a computer
● Have students log into Kahoot and begin playing as a class

Assessment:
● After students finish playing Kahoot, have them work on their worksheets
● Tell them that this will be collected for a grade
● Allow students to use their rulers for the worksheets

Closure:
● Collect worksheets
● Put away computers, meter sticks, and rulers
