Introduction to Microscopes
September 2018
Standards :
PE:
MSLS11 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes
Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one cell or many
different numbers and types of cells.
DCI :
LS1.A Structure and Function: All living things are made up of cells, which is the smallest unit that can be
said to be alive. An organism may consist of one single cell (unicellular) or many different numbers and
types of cells (multicellular).
Practices : What practices are you doing?
● Asking Questions and Defining Problems
● Developing and Using Models
● Planning and Carrying Out Investigations
● Analyzing and interpreting data
● Using mathematics and computational thinking
● Constructing explanations and Designing Solutions
● Engaging in argument from evidence
● Obtaining, evaluating and communicating information
Crosscutting Concepts : What concepts are you teaching that may also be used in a different
lesson?
● Patterns
● Cause and effect
● Scale, proportion and quantity
● Systems and system models
● Energy and matter: Flows, cycles, and conservation
● Structure and function
● Stability and change
Learning Target:
Describe proper microscope technique.
Success Criteria :
1. I can correctly label microscope parts
2. I can explain how to properly use a microscope
3. I can understand how to calculate total magnification
Today’s Essential Question(s) :
How do you use a microscope?
Materials needed :
● Microscopes
● Microscope worksheet
● Technology to play video

Warmup :
Have you ever used a microscope?
Do you know what a microscope does?
Agenda :
1. Show intro to cells video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFuEo2ccTPA
2. Show intro to microscope video and have students write 3 important things they learned
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hc8br_c5lIA
3. Have students attempt to complete labeling worksheet (can touch and maneuver
microscopes on tables) https://www.helpteaching.com/tests/309488/microscopediagram
4. Come together and complete worksheet as a class
5. Exit ticket: What was the most interesting thing that you learned today?

Learning Target:
Properly use a microscope to locate and focus images.
Success Criteria :
1. I can correctly focus from low to high power.
2. I can make a wet mount.
3. I can move objects within the field of view.
4. I can make detailed drawings of my observations.
Today’s Essential Question(s) :
How can I properly use a microscope to observe the letter “e”?
Materials needed :
● Slides/Coverslips ● Wet mount anchor
● E’s https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gxBSeMEqvV0JoWxNrOhgnCHNuQTcrRjU
● Water Hd_ZnVhmEk/edit
● Microscopes ● Investigation Worksheet

Warmup :
Team Talk:
1. What do you remember from yesterday?
2. What do you still need answered?
Agenda :
1. Team Talk review yesterday’s lesson
2. Explain what we will be doing today
3. Demonstrate how to make a wet mount while students refer to anchor (they tell me what
to do)
4. Have students create a wet mount with letter e and draw it in low, medium, and high
power
*Extra time? Look at prepared slides and practice with microscope
5. Closure/Discuss:
Was the “e” right side up or upside down?
Why do you think this occured?
