This is a summary of changes to the National Soil Survey Handbook (NSSH). The official copy
of the NSSH is in HTML format and MSWord files at http://soils.usda.gov/technical/handbook/.

1. Deleted section 630.01(e) and merged the responsibilities of the former National
Geospatial Development Center (now Geospatial Research Unit) into the National Soil
Survey Center.
2. Updated 1 occurrence of “Soil Survey Laboratory” to “NSSC Kellogg Soil Survey
Laboratory” in section 630.02.
3. Updated the name of the NCSS soil characterization database in section 630.02.
4. Expanded the information for accessing benchmark soil list in section 630.03.
5. Updated office names, entities, and abbreviations to the current structure of the Soil
Science Division.

3. Updated 2 occurrences of “SSL” to “KSSL.”
4. Updated 9 occurrences of “National Cartography and Geospatial Management Center” to
“National Geospatial Center of Excellence.”
5. Updated 7 occurrences of “MLRA office” to clarify the office (SSO vs. SSRO).
6. Updated name of Soil Geochemistry Spatial database in section 644.01 (d).
7. Updated USDA non-discrimination statement in section 644.06 (f) (2).
8. Updated section 644.07 (c) for components used in the U.S. general soil map of the U.S.
9. Updated references to sections of NSSH Part 608.
10. Updated title for “MLRA regional leader” to "soil survey regional director" in exhibit
644-1.
11. Deleted section 644.01 (b) about the Soil Data Mart being a type of soil survey online
delivery system.
12. Replaced 16 occurrences of “Soil Data Mart” with “Web Soil Survey” or certified data
source in the context of product delivery.
