NSSH Amendment 26

August 2013

This is a summary of changes to the National Soil Survey Handbook (NSSH). The official copy
of the NSSH is in HTML format and MSWord files at http://soils.usda.gov/technical/handbook/.

Part 606 – Working Agreements

1. Corrected branch contact in section 606.01 (a) (2) (iii).
2. Updated office names in section 606.01 (a) (5) (iii).
3. Updated position titles throughout.
4. Deleted the term "update soil surveys requiring extensive revision" from sections 606.01 
(a) (2) and 606.01 (e).
5. Clarified the wording on interagency agreements in section 606.01 (d).
6. Updated 3 occurrences of "Soil Survey Division" to "Soil Science Division."
7. Updated the Specifications section of exhibit 606­1 to the current standards for Part 647 
of the NSSH.
8. English edit changes were made throughout.

Part 607 – Initial Soil Survey Preparation

1. Updated office names in section 607.01.
2. Edited the paragraph in section 607.01 (b) to remove mention of the obsolete Soil Survey 
Schedule.
3. English edit changes were made throughout.

Part 617 – Soil Survey Interpretations

1. Revised one occurrence of "Soil Survey Division" to "Soil Science Division."
2. Updated 1 occurrence of “Soil Survey Laboratory” to “NSSC Kellogg Soil Survey
Laboratory” in section 617.00.
3. Changed header for item 617.03 (a) to reflect name change for Part 622.
4. Updated 3 occurrences of “MLRA soil survey regional office (MO)” to “soil survey
regional office (SSRO).”
5. Replaced 14 occurrences of “Soil Data Mart” with “Web Soil Survey” in the context of
product delivery.
6. In section 617.11 (f), updated the hyperlink to download the SSURGO Template
Database Customization Guide.
7. In section 617.11 (g), updated the hyperlink (to download the national SSURGO template
database), from the Soil Data Mart to the Web Soil Survey.

Part 630 – Benchmark Soils

 1. Deleted section 630.01(e) and merged the responsibilities of the former National
Geospatial Development Center (now Geospatial Research Unit) into the National Soil
Survey Center.
2. Updated 1 occurrence of “Soil Survey Laboratory” to “NSSC Kellogg Soil Survey
Laboratory” in section 630.02.
3. Updated the name of the NCSS soil characterization database in section 630.02.
4. Expanded the information for accessing benchmark soil list in section 630.03.
5. Updated office names, entities, and abbreviations to the current structure of the Soil
Science Division.

Part 638 – Soil Data Systems

1. Updated 3 occurrences of “Soil Survey Laboratory” to “Kellogg Soil Survey Laboratory.”
2. Updated 4 occurrences of “SSL” to “KSSL.”
3. Replaced 10 occurrences of either “MO” or “MOs” with “SSRO.”
4. Deleted 5 occurrences of the abbreviation “MLRA” when used as an adjective modifying
either the soil survey office or the soil survey regional office.
5. Deleted URL for the Soil Data Mart webpage in section 638.2 B (2).
6. Deleted URL for the Soil Data Mart webpage in section 638.2 B (8) and replaced it with
the URL for the Web Soil Survey, as the source for STATSGO2 data.
7. Deleted 6 occurrences of “Soil Data Mart” in the context of either product delivery or the
webpage.

Part 639 – National Soil Information System (NASIS)

1. Revised guidance on populating data for combination horizons in section 639.3 F. (3) (v)
for accuracy and clarity.
2. Revised one occurrence of "Soil Survey Division" to "Soil Science Division."
3. Revised URL for the eAuthorization homepage in Subpart A, section 639.2 C to reflect
the current address.
4. Edits were made to describe the addition of new tables with NASIS version 6.0, reassign
responsibility for ensuring training in NASIS software from the state office to the MO,
and clarify guidance under the Site, Pedon, Transect, Site Association, Legend, Mapunit,
Data Mapunit, and Project objects.
5. Replaced 1 occurrence of “Soil Data Mart” with “Web Soil Survey” in the context of
product delivery.
6. Replaced 3 occurrences of “MO” with “SSRO.”
7. Deleted 10 occurrences of the abbreviation “MLRA” when used as an adjective
modifying either the soil survey office or the soil survey regional office.

Part 644 – Delivering Soil Survey Information

1. Updated 2 occurrences of “Director of Soil Survey” to “Soil Science Division Director.”
2. Updated 2 occurrences of “Soil Survey Laboratory” to “Kellogg Soil Survey Laboratory”
and 1 occurrence to “SCS Soil Survey Laboratory.”

10. Updated title for “MLRA regional leader” to "soil survey regional director" in exhibit
644-1.
11. Deleted section 644.01 (b) about the Soil Data Mart being a type of soil survey online
delivery system.
12. Replaced 16 occurrences of “Soil Data Mart” with “Web Soil Survey” or certified data
source in the context of product delivery.

Part 651 – Advance Soil Survey Information

1. Replaced 9 occurrences of “Soil Data Mart” with “Web Soil Survey” in the context of
product delivery.
2. Reworded the text in section 651.03 (c) about sensitive areas for clarity.
3. Corrected references to sections of the NSSH outside of Part 615.
4. Removed page header from page 1 to match other parts of the NSSH.

Part 655 – Technical Soil Services

Replaced one occurrence of “Soil Data Mart” with “Web Soil Survey” in the context of
product delivery.
