1. A pipe line of 0.6 m diameter is 1.5 km long. To increase the discharge another line of the
same diameter is introduced parallel to the first in the second half of the length. Neglecting
minor loses; find the increase in discharge if Darcy’s friction factor is 0.04. the head at inlet is
300 mm
2. Oil at 27 degree celcius (density =900 kg/m^3 and dynamic viscosity = 40 centi poise) is
flowing steadily in a 1.25 cm diameter, 40 m long pipe. During the flow, the pressure at the
pipe inlet and exit is measured to be 8.25 bar and 0.97 bar, respectively. Determine the flow
rate of oil through the pipe assuming the pipe is a) horizontal b) inclined 20 degree upward
c) inclined 20 degree downwards
3. Derive the hagen poiseullie formula for the flow through circular pipes
4. Three pipes of 400 mm, 200 mm and 300 mm diameters have lengths of 400 m, 200 m and
300 m respectively. They are connected in series to make a compound pipe. The ends of this
compound pipe are connected with two tanks whose difference of water levels is 16 m. If
the coefficient of friction for those pipes is same and equal to 0.005, determine the
discharge through the compound pipe neglecting first the minor losses and then including
them.
5. A crude oil of kinematic viscosity 0.4 stokes is flowing through a pipe of diameter 300 mm at
the rate of 300 litres per sec. Find the head lost due to friction for a length of 50 m of the
pipe. Take co efficient of friction as 0.06.
6. Find the diameter of a pipe of length 2000m when the rate of flow of water through the pipe
is 200 litres/s and the head lost due to friction is 4 m. Take the value of C= 50 in chezys
formulas.
7. A 150 mm diameter pipe reduces the diameter abruptly to 100 mm diameter. if the pipe
carries water at 30 litres per second , calculate the pressure loss across the contraction . take
the co efficient of contraction as 0.6
8. A pipe of diameter 0.4 m and length of 2000 m is connected to a reservoir at one end. The
other end of the pipe is connected to a junction from which two pipes of length 1000 m and
diameter 300 mm run in parallel. These parallel pipes are connected to another reservoir,
which is having level of water 10 m below the water level of the above reservoir. Determine
the total discharge of f= 0.015. Neglect minor loses.
