Question 23 [Practice Book] [IES EC 2006]
Consider the following statements regarding the asymptotic Bode plots used for frequency response
analysis
1. The deviation of the actual magnitude response for a zero on real axis is 3 dB at the corner frequency.
2. The phase angle for a pair of complex conjugate poles at un-damped frequency depends upon the value
of damping ratio.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct ?

  6
(A) Only 1 (B) Only 2 (C) Both 1 and 2 (D) Neither 1 and 2
Ans. (A)

Sol. (i) For G ( s ) H ( s ) 
1  sT
Magnitude can be written as,
1
G ( j) H ( j) 
1  2T 2
In dB, 20 log G ( j) H ( j)  20 log1  20 log 1  2T 2
1
Error in log-magnitude for 0    is given by,
T
10 log (1  2T 2 )  10 log1.

Therefore, error at corner frequency   is 10log(1  1)  20log1   3 dB.

So, it is a straight line having slope of  40 dB/decade and passing through the point u.
Therefore, the asymptotic plot consist of
(i) M  0 u  1
(ii) M   40 log10 u u  1
