North Carolina A&T State University (Nov. 2017 – Jan. 2018): Deana Lacy McQuitty, Ph.D.
CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology: Examining the Relationship Between
Classroom Teacher’s Cultural Competence and Special Education Referrals for Culturally and
Linguistically Diverse Students
Conducted a literature review under Dr. Deana McQuitty that examined the state of North
Carolina’s special education referrals for students of minority populations in comparison to
the national average of special education referrals for minority students in the public-school
setting.
Concluded that there was an increase in special education referrals for students of minority
populations in North Carolina when compared to the national average of referrals for minority
students in the public-school setting.
Determined that cultural and systematic biases from national standardized examinations and
the lack of diverse educators in the North Carolina public-school system was the primary
cause for the influx of unnecessary special education referrals for minority students.
Displayed a strong work ethic and commitment to confidentiality when reading diversity
reports of other public-schools across the state of North Carolina and the United States
Department of Education national statistics.
Supported the necessary operations needed to maintain a functioning research office by
assisting other partners with their current projects while learning the aspects of conducting
scientific research professionally.
