BIM Model of Central Energy Plant.

T
he McKenney’s team integrated a new
600-ton cooling system in the central
energy plant at a medical center.
THE CHALLENGE
A midsize medical center relied on a single-
source heating and cooling system for its 100-
bed hospital and other facilities. Without a
secondary chiller or heating system, the cen-
ter risked leaving patients, staff and visitors
without cool air or hot water should the legacy
system malfunction. The team was tasked with
integrating a new chilled water system to help
reduce the stress on the single source simul-
taneous heating and cooling system without
affecting the hospital’s 24-hour operations.
THE SOLUTION
The team performed pipe and sheet metal
prefabrication to speed installation and coor-
dinated the schedule to manage the integra-
tion of the new LEED certified mechanical
system. BIM and the use of detailed, step-
by-step methods of procedure (MOP) helped
ensure a seamless, undetected transition
to the new heating and cooling system.
THE RESULTS
The transition from the existing to integrated
system was performed with virtually no negative
effect on operations and no patient impact.
The upgrade also facilitates the build-out of
new patient spaces for increased capacity.
