Xstrata has approved the development of
the second phase of its Lion ferrochrome
complex expansion near Steelpoort.
The expansion will involve the
construction and commissioning of a 360-
thousand tonne per year capacity smelter
and will increase the Xstrata-Merafe
chrome venture’s total ferrochrome
capacity to over 2.3 million tonnes per
year.
The project has met all of Xstrata’s key
value and risk metrics for some three
years since it was first considered.
However, the absence of security of supply
of electricity resulted in the project’s
approval being held in abeyance until a
firm allocation of capacity was received by
Eskom for the second phase. In addition,
emerging plans within Xstrata Alloys for
an “own generation” capability further
reduces Xstrata’s concerns on the
availability of electricity by the time this
plant is commissioned.
The development will entail a total
capital investment of R4.9 billion (US$710
million) and includes R700 million

escalating energy costs. The project is
further aligned with some of the key
principles contained in the South African
government’s recently publicised draft
Integrated Resource Plan 2010 including
world leading energy-efficiency and using
electricity to create sustainable jobs.
“This investment is aligned with the
South Africa’s Industrial Policy Action
Plan and demonstrates Xstrata’s

R4.9 billion
(US$100 million) for the concurrent
development of the 1.2 million ROM tonne
per year Magareng mine within the
Thorncliffe mine complex. Construction is
scheduled to begin in the first quarter of
2011, with commissioning planned for the
first half of 2013.
The expansion will create over 1,000
continued commitment to beneficiation
following the R917 million investment by
the Venture in Project Tswelopele, a
chrome pelletising plant in Rustenburg.
The Lion smelter development is also the
first major investment of its kind for
South Africa since the government
announced the amended Mining Charter,

will be generated during the construction
phase. Around 80 percent of the total
expenditure on project goods and services
will be sourced locally.
The expansion will utilise Xstrata’s
proprietary energy-efficient Premus
technology, and will reduce the overall
cost of the venture’s total ferrochrome
production by around 6percent. Xstrata’s
Premus technology consumes
approximately a third less electricity than
other available smelting technologies.
In addition, Xstrata is advancing its
own power generation plans and is
currently completing a feasibility study for
the first phase of a 600MW thermal power
generation plant that will supplement
future electricity supply.
Xstrata’s pooling and sharing venture
Merafe Resources, holds a 20.5 percent
interest in the venture and has an option
to participate in the expansion.
Commenting on the decision, Xstrata
Alloys’ Chief Executive, Peet Nienaber,

support the growth of new local
enterprises and develop technical skills.

amended Mining Charter. We also look
forward to Merafe’s participation in the
expansion and understand that they have
their own processes to follow prior to
making a commitment,” he continued.

for Ga-Maepa
If residents of Ga-Maepa village are lucky, electricity supply to their homes will be swithched on
around 20 december this year. The village is situated across the road from Hannah Lodge
between Burgersfort and Ohrigstad.
The contractor, who explained the scope of the project on Wednesday to community
representatives at a technical committee meeting in the village, already started with excavations

project will supply jobs to 16 local people during the initial phases of the project before the more
technical pases near the completion of the project when only six local people will be employed.
The ward councillor for the village, Mr Josias Mahlake, said at the moment there are more
dwellings, about 173 as people tend to migrate when they hear projects such as electrification are
starting, but only the initial 137 dwellings identified when the project was approved will receive
electricity at this stage.

Woensdag was sy eerder erger as beter.
Terug by die dokter op Lydenburg is die
dosis antibiotika en koorsmedikasie
verhoog.
”Sy wou net nie beter word nie, maar
teen Vrydagoggend was ons so bly toe sy
op en wakker voor die TV sit en Telly
Tubbies kyk”. Haar koors het kort daarna
weer opgevlam en die gesin is terug na die
dokter. Daar is toe besluit om Zoë na ‘n
pediater in Nelspruit te neem en daar in
die hospitaal op te neem vir behandeling.
In die pas na Nelspruit was daar egter
‘n ongeluk en die gesin moes omdraai en
die Bambi-pad Nelspruit toe neem. “Sy
was baie pap en op die pad het sy net
ophou asemhaal. Ek het gelukkig my
sustersopleiding voltooi, so het geweet wat
om te doen.
Sy het weer begin asemhaal, maar ek
kan nie vir jou sê wat het deur my kop
gegaan nie,” sê Michelle.
Sy en haar man Hugo het desperaat by
die Ngodwana Sappi Kliniek gaan aanklop
toe Zoë weer ophou asemhaal.
Die mediese personeel kon haar egter
nie weer bybring nie.“Ons moes met ons

weer deur alles gaan nie,” vertel Michelle.
Haar ouers het met Freddie Nelspruit toe
gejaag waar hy dadelik in die intensiewe

beenmurgtoetse is gedoen en vinnig is
vasgestel dat hy malaria het.
Teen druktyd was hy bestendig en het
die gesin gehoop dat hy betyds by die huis

Gelukkig het die trauma nie dié baba
nadelig beïnvloed nie. Ek wens niemand
toe wat ons moes deurmaak nie”.
“Baie dankie vir al die dokters, die
wonderlike mense van Ohrigstad wat ons
so op die hande dra, julle is fantasties.
Dankie vir al die oproepe en gebede”.
Die begrafnisdiens is Saterdagoggend
op Ohrigstad vanuit die NG Kerk. Die
diens begin om 11:00.

On the 15 October 2010, Yvette Espag and
the ladies from the Financial Department
at ASA Metals held a breast cancer
awareness tea party at the Smelter lapa.
Their goal of raising R1000 for the Cansa
Lowveld Association was exceeded. They
raised a total of R6 110.
The money they raised will go towards
breast cancer reseach. They would like to
thank, each and everyone who made a
contribution towards this cause. The
organisers also gave a special word of
appreciation to Silver Oaks Recruitment &
Labour Consultants and Lorabi 100 for their
contributions. Ellie van der Linde gave a
presentation explaining all the facts and
necessary information regarding breast
cancer to the women. After the presentation
a delicious finger lunch buffet which was
sponsored individually made the cancer tea
party a huge success.The ladies at the
Financial Department would like to thank
the men and women who came to show
interest, and who made a contribution
towards cancer awareness.

Boss Day at Modikwa

Last week Saturday saw Modikwa Platinum Mine’s leadership
treated to fun and games and a hearty meal during Boss Day
celebrations. Although the theme was Hawaii, nothing prevented
everyone present to enjoy themselves on Latin music such as
Macarena (with the accompanying dance which was also tried
by Business leader Sean O’Conner, right) by Los del Rio. Limbo
dancing was also on the agenda as weel as hula hoops and
various other games before the ‘guests’ was allowed to enjoy
some refreshments.

On 7 October the Greater Tubatse Municipal

Cllr. Arnold Sello
Makofane was born in
Pidima Village.
He was an academic, who
started his primary
education in Kgomatau
Primary School. In 1985 he
proceeded to Sogane
Secondary School where he
obtained his Matric
Certificate in 1989.

Security Company as an officer. He studied with UNISA as a part-time
student and obtained the following: ABET Programme Certificate and
Local Government Administration and Management Diploma.
Between 1998 and 1999 he obtained an internship at the Gauteng Local
Government in the office of the Mayor as assistant Human Resource
Manager. In 2000 - 2001 he was awarded a scholarship from Gauteng
Provincial Government to study at Wits for a Community Leadership and
Environmental Policy Diploma. He was also a leader and an activist. He
became a member of the ANC at Springs Extension 4 Langaville branch
in 1998. He was elected as the Brakpan and Springs Domestic Violence
Forum chairperson. From 2002 - 2010 he was elected as the Pidima
Maphoko Development Forum co-ordinator. From 2002 - 2205 he was a
member of the ANC Madikabje branch (ward 15).
In 2006 - 2010 in the new ward 21 - he was elected as a ward councillor
for the Greater Tubatse Municipal Council. He served in the Technical
Portfolio Committee, Rules Committee and an Oversight Committee. He
served as ANC deputy secretary in the new ward 21, Malekaneng
Branch. He served as a branch elections co-ordinator in 2009 and as an
ID co-ordinator at LET level. He is leaving behind his wife Thabile, two

Phetole Frans Mohale
Mr. Phetole Frans Mohale, who was
affectionately known as “Mateng” had his life
come to a tragic end in a car accident near
Schoonoord on Wednesday night 8
September 2010 at about 21:00.
Utter shock and disbelief gripped those
who knew him as the sad news spread like
wild fire in Limpopo and further afield.
“Mateng” has been in business for the
last 30 years. He came to Steelpoort in 1981,
started with a butchery, hence the nickname
“Mateng” and never looked back. In singing

Leboeng says goodbye
“Mateng” Mohale was an executive of
Nkwe Platinum responsible for liaison with
Limpopo’s regional structures of Traditional
leaders, District and Local Municipalities
political and civic organisations. He was the
face, anchor and pillar of Nkwe Platinum on
the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex.
He worked tirelessly to achieve the
objectives of the company.
“Mateng” is a true son of the ANC, which
he has served in various capacities for more
than 35 years. He was an activist and a
community builder to the core.
It is, without doubt, true that many an
ANC young lion of yesteryear owe a
significant measure of indebtedness to
“Mateng” as a result of which, many have
since risen to higher positions of leadership.
His capacity for self sacrifice and service
to the community is stuff of legend.
MM says
farewell
after 5 years
Greater Tubatse Municipality Municipal Manager, Mr
Simon Malepeng, left the services of the municipality
this week after completion of his five year contract.
His contract expired at the end of August.
At the formal farewell function for Mr Malepeng, the
Mayor, Councillor Ralepane Mamekoa, told the guests
that the municipality has grown immensely during Mr
Malapeng’s term as municipal manager and that he has
left a solid base to whoever his successor will be.
Mr Malapeng in replying to the Mayor’s speech,
said he encountered, with his colleagues, various
pitfalls and challenges during his five years at the helm
of the administration in Burgersfort, but managed
through collective wisdom and actions to rise to these
challenges and succeeded in progressing towards
building a better democratic society and platinum city.
He said he will continue to value his relationship with
Greater Tubatse Municipality and will not allow small
issues and human fallibilities to supersede the bigger
picture, stating that networks established could be of

School and proceeded to Thokwane Primary for stan-
dard 6. He completed his secondary education of the
then Bantu Education at Mabuya Secondary School.
He enrolled for matric at Parish in 1973.
In 1973 he worked as a private teacher at Mokoropo
Primary School for a short term. He worked as a clerk
at TCL Chrome Mine in 1975 and 1977 at Dilokong
Mine.
He worked as a sales consultant for African Life (1986
- 1990), Metropolitan Life (1991 - 1994) and Old
Mutual (1995 - 1996).
In 1996 he was a member of the Dilokong Develop-
ment Forum. In 1996 - 1997 he was a branch secre-
tary. In 1997 he worked as a Project Manager for food
parcels at Madikane Development. He served as a
secretary of various village committees. From 1998 -
1999 he was a warehouse manager of the IEC.

council until he was seconded to form part of the Execu-
tive Committee so serve as Head of Finance portfolio until
his untimely death.
He is leaving behind his wife Ida, children Masello, Shatadi,
Happiness, Judith, Hebert and Moeketsi, 4 sisters, a brother
and two grandchildren.
Cllr Manyaka was shot outside his house on 24 Septem-
ber. The seven shots was fired at a very close range at Cllr
Manyaka.
Council and municipal officials condemned the crimi-
nal activity that claimed Cllr Manyaka’s life. They
strongly expressed their concern about the way he was
gunned down and appealed to all authorities to help
bring those responsible to justice. “There should be no
place for such criminals within our municipality”.
In August Leboeng went into mourning after at
least 10 people from so many villages around Leboeng
died when the Sekhuhkune Express bus they were
travelling in from Polokwane, went down the mountain
on the George’s Valley Road between Polokwane and
Tzaneen. Eleven people were declared dead at the
scene, ten were seriously injured and 36 were slightly
injured. The department of Transport sent a team of
independent investigators to the scene of the accident to
probe further.
A mass funeral was held at Leboeng on 7 August
2010. The formal mass funeral service was also
attended by government representatives (municipal,
district and provincial) as well as clergy from the ZCC
chrurch wo attended and conducted the service. There
was a solemn atmosphere as the caskets arrived and
mourners lined the way for the hearses. A large number
of mourners were also transported by the Sekhukhune
Express to the funeral.
The death toll tallied at 10 from Leboeng and one
from Steelpoort.

Caring by donating
a home to the needy
The Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District
Municipality, Councillor Mogobo David Magabe, again
called for parnerships in dvelopment at the handover
function of a house to a destitute person in Dresden
village on 17 August 2010.
Cllr Magabe told the crowd gathered at the
ceremony where a house was handed over to Mr Tshepo
Mamogale, that the government encouraged private
enterprise to become involved in development and
upliftment projects in their communities. A

contributor towards donating the house to Mr

On 2 July Executive Mayor of the district, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe
held an outreach at ga-Mokgotho Village near Penge.
He grew up in this village and was invited back to the village by the elders
for a blessing ceremony after completing his first year as executive mayor.
The event turned into a type of Imbizo where issues such as shortage of
water, electricity, roads, RDP houses, employment and educational and
social facilities for the youth were discussed.
Members of parliament, councilors of Greater Tubatse Municipality,
chiefs and indunas from neighbouring villages and officials from various
government departments joined the villagers for the celebrations.
In response to the problems raised by the villagers, Cllr Magabe said “I
am aware of all the hardships that this village, my village has had to endure
with for the past 16 years of democracy. Born and raised here myself, I am
not foreign to service delivery challenges facing the community”.
“However, I am happy to report that on the issue of a road for the entire
ward 16, I have spoken to the MEC of Roads and Transport in our
province, we agreed that for the time being, your road will be graveled
continuously until a tarred road is constructed. On the issue of water, I
commit my office to start plans of giving you a water reticulation scheme. I
am continuously engaging various departments in the province to take care
of the needs of you the people of the village”.

disparities regarding allocation of RDP houses in the village. And I will
investigate further and recommend to relevant offices that all the poorer
households get RDP houses”.

The Marathon will start at 07:00
tomorrow morning at Modikwa Platinum
Mine and end at Steelpoort Academy.

time to give the atheletes a chance to
safely pass through.

tournament
The Burgersfort United Sports Club soccer tournament took place last
weekend. The games were played at the grounds of Laerskool Burgersfort.
Get all the results on page 16 of this week’s newspaper.
The teams on this page: blue and yellow (Burgersfort United), black and
white (Nelspruit), blue and red (Lydenburg), green and blue (Piet Retief),
blue and light blue (Burgersfort United juniors), Yellow and striped green
(Ext. 10 - Young Stars).

Maatlopo is
riding the
winning wave
Maatlopo FC collected three points in their
away game last week at Jane Furse.
They beat King Born 3-2 at Ga-Phaahla.
This Sunday, 24 October Maatlopo will host
Ngwaabe City Motors at Moroke.
In the Nedbank Cup Maatlopo advanced
again. They beat Material Black Chiefs 4-0 in
the Jane Furse on 17 October 2010.
Trevor Mohlala scored two goals. Lovemore
Mokgotho and Timothy Thobejane also
scored.
The man of the weekend was Trevor Mohlala
who scored in both games the team played.
On 23 October Maatlopo will face Happy
Boys at the Jane Furse stadium. This game
will decide which of the teams will represent
Sekhukhune inthe Nedbank Cup provincial
play-offs.
“We hope to repeat what we did last season
by representing our region well. This time we
are in the drivers seat and is sure that on
Saturday people will be able to differentiate
between the boys and the men,” said Mr
Jimmy Mohlala, spokesman of Maatlopo FC.

the Jane Furse game can book their seat for

Burgersfort United’s local
tournament a huge success
Burgersfort United held their second
annual soccer tournament. Teams
from Lydenburg and as far as Piet
Retief cam to participate in the event.

On Saturday the Juniors played first.
Their final was between Mighty
Rovers, a team from the Burgersfort
area and Burgersfort United. Mighty
Rovers won the game. The losers final
was played between Happy Fighters of
Praktiseer and Young Stars of Ext. 10
in Burgersfort.
Abdullah Amod was named the best
goalkeeper.
The seniors started playing out on
Saturday evening and continued on
Sunday. In the end Burgersfort
United played in the final against Piet
Retief. Piet Retief won with a penalty
shootout. The score: 2-2 and later 2-4.
The best goalkeeper was from Piet
Retief and the player who scored the
most goals was
Faheem Paruk. He
scored 6 goals.
