6. Problem Statement. Malaria still constitutes
a serious health problem in Nigeria particularly in
rural communities where government presence is
low. The resources committed by government to
fight this scourge are enormous but the endemic
nature of the scourge and the number of persons
exposed to malaria attacks makes it virtually
impossible for government efforts to be felt in all
nook and crannies in the country. In most rural
communities; malaria is responsible for 60%
outpatient visit to health facilities, 30% childhood
death, 25% of death in children under one year
and 11% of maternal deaths. The grim side is that
malaria is responsible for over 1,500 deaths in
every 100,000 population.
It is against this background that the Volunteer
Care Trust Foundation as a Non-Government
Charity Organization (NGO) is seeking to
complement and collaborate with Government to
fight the scourge in 12 communities in 8 Local
Government Areas in Benue State.
7. Project Description. This project is intended
to control the spread of malaria affecting pregnant
women and children aged 0—5 years in the most
vulnerable communities in Benue State.

8. Approach. We seek to achieve this control
measure by purchasing and distributing long
lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets to the
targeted population. We shall also carryout
sensitization campaigns in these communities on
the proper ways of maintaining a mosquito free
environment.
9. Success Factor. The reliance on malaria
drugs and fumigation as tools for malaria control is
no longer achieving the desired results. Vectors
are becoming more and more resistant to drugs.
The surest deterrence to malaria attack is the use
of Bed nets and keeping a malaria free
environment. We already have existing malaria
control centres in a number of communities where
our activities has led significantly to a reduction in
hospital visits and morbidity through our efforts in
malaria control managers in these communities
who ensure that the Bed nets distributed to target
groups are put to daily use. We have also
succeeded in discarding traditional myths in target
communities on the use of bedside nets. This has
led to an increase in the use of bedside nets by
recipients.
