Outside of the art world,
a crowd estimated at 10,000
people was able to take part
in or bear witness to all the
usual activities, including the
diaper derby, the bed races,
a car show, a vintage tractor
show and a larger-than-usual
craft fair.
“We had about 30 more
craft vendors than last year,”
Wengert said.
HOMETOWN PARADE
The weekend kicked off
Friday night with the annual
parade, led by Meredith Gru-
enwald, a veteran and the re-
cipient of the 2018 Repub-
lic-Monitor’s Citizen of the
Year award, who rode in a
vintage military Jeep dressed
as Belle from Beauty and the
Beast.
The Jeep was a nod to
her past service. Perryville
Mayor Ken Baer signed a
proclamation last year de-
claring 2018 the “Year of the
Woman Veteran”. In addition
to Gruenwald’s royal car-
riage, several other women
veterans joined the parade on
a special float.
Sal and Vita Galati, own-
ers of Galati’s Italian Restau-
rant and recipients of the 2018
Republic-Monitor’s Business
of the Year award, also rode
in the parade, which also fea-
tured bands from both St.
Vincent and Perryville High
School, along with fire en-
gines, clubs, businesses and
assorted politicians seeking
election or re-election.
“A lot of people said it
seemed longer,” Wengert
said, “but it was about the
same number of entries as
last year.”

ADK crowns ‘Cutest Baby’
For the Republic-Monitor
For many years, Alpha
Delta Kappa Women’s Ed-
ucators Sorority has spon-
sored a “Cutest Baby Con-
test” in conjunction with
Perryville’s Mayfest activ-
ities.
A large portion of the
proceeds generated from
this contest are used by the
ADK organization to annu-
ally award a scholarship to
a Perry County college stu-
dent who applies and meets
the required criteria. To
date, ADK has been able to
award more than $12,000 to
deserving applicants.
There were a total of
eleven eligible applicants
for the “Cutest Baby Con-
test” this year, and mem-
bers of Alpha Delta Kappa
would like to thank every
family who participated,
and also, each and every
person who stopped by the
tent to vote.
The winners of this
ipant got to travel the route
twice. Kevin Gruenwald,
husband of Meredith Gru-
enwald, was dressed up as
Beast to her Beauty. Since
Gruenwald was at the front
of the parade and Barnhart
near the end, Gruenwald got
back to the starting point in
time to ride with Barnhart on
a flatbed from Perry Coun-
ty Towing, along with sever-
al costumed members of He-
roes for Kids.
“I loved it,” Barnhart said.
One of the most popu-
lar costumed characters was
“Marshall”, a Dalmatian fire-
fighter from the animated
PAW Patrol show, which airs
on Nick Jr.
QUILT MANIA
The Memory Makers
Quilt Club held their annual
show at the First Assemblies
of God Church on Friday and
Saturday, and boasted approx-

TINY TRACTORS
Saturday afternoon, the
kids had a chance to see just
how strong they were when
they took part in the Mini
Tractor pull. Sawyer Clif-
ton came in first in the 0-40
pound weight class with a
pull of 38 feet, 11 inches. In
the 41-50 pound class, Shane
Nicholes was first with a pull
of 43 feet. Brooklyn Strong
was tops in the 51-60 pound
class with a pull of 36 feet, 8
inches. Presley Clifton won
the 61-70 pound class with
a pull of 37 feet, 8 inches. A
total of nine kids participated
in the event.
TOSSIN’ WASHERS
The washers tournament
was a raging success, espe-
cially on Saturday night.
The two tournaments
combined for 62 teams,
while Friday night’s event
had a total of 22 teams.
“I’m not sure if that’s a
record, but it sure is a lot of
teams,” Sue Verseman said.
On Friday, Matt Stark and
Cody Statler was victorious
over Kirk Hadler and Ber-
nie Riehn in the champion-
ship game.
In the first tournament
on Saturday, Adam Flentge
and Ryan Robbins out last-
ed Dalton Hoehn and Shawn
Staler and 28 other teams. In
the late tournament, Andrew
Martin and Andrew Meyer,
beat Zach Schremp and Dal-
ton Buehler in the champion-
ship game.
DIAPER DANDIES
Cell phones, remotes, and
other technology that has be-
come a part of everyday adult
life may seem mundane,
but Saturday’s diaper derby
proved just the opposite. At 11
a.m., as parents, siblings, and
friends crowded the Down-
town Plaza, spectators learned
firsthand how attractive those
items can be to little ones.
The event began with a
diaper decorating contest,
which featured four contes-
tants. Daniel Boxdorfer, son
of Mo and Travis Boxdorfer,
earned first place in his Pin-
occhio costume. Isabel Meyr,
daughter of Andrew and Eliz-
abeth Meyr and the only fe-
male entrant, came in second
dressed as Tinkerbell. Emmet
Basler, son of Alexis Doza
and Steven Basler, came in
third with a Stitch diaper and
T-shirt. Trenton Brown, son
of Ashley and Travis Brown,
was dressed as Dash from The
Incredibles.
After the decorating con-
test, a few of the entrants were
joined by other peers on all
fours as they prepared to race
(or toddle) to the finish line.
Sicily Layton, daughter of
Paige and Gabe Layton, didn’t
stand for any distractions and
zoomed past her opponents
with flying colors. Trenton
Brown came in second by in-
crements as he chased down a
family member’s phone, only
to have it moved bit by bit to-
ward the finish line. Evelyn
Taylor, daughter of Andrew
and Mindy Taylor, gave up on
asking to be held and eventu-
ally made her way to her fam-
ily at the other end.
The winners of these con-
tests received a certificate for
free diapers from the Proctor
and Gamble stand.
MOCHIP
The Missouri Child Iden-
tification Program held a free
session on Saturday from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Colon-
nade Room near the carnival,
making it convenient for par-
ents to drop in for a bit of air
conditioning and to collect
vital information about their
children, should an Amber
Alert ever be necessary.

MoCHIP led the event with
the help of local volunteers
and the Perryville Masonic
Lodge 670.
“Since its inception in
2007, 11 kids have been re-
covered because of our pro-
gram,” said Don Black. Over
700,000 children have gone
through the MoCHIP pro-
gram since 2007. No micro-
chip is involved.
MoCHIP, which is fund-
ed by the Missouri Grand
Lodge, is a free program pro-
vided for children from birth
to age 21, and has even been
made available to Alzhei-
mer’s patients in some cases.
On Saturday at noon, just
halfway through the day with
a steady stream of visitors,
22 local children had been
helped through the program.
MoCHIP helps parents col-
lect a photograph, digital fin-
gerprints, basic information,
emergency contacts, a den-
tal bite impression, and two
laminated ID cards. The dig-
ital information is stored on a
disc readable by law enforce-
ment only, and that disc is
given to the parents. All in-
formation is wiped from Mo-
CHIP computers before they
leave the site.
Six Masonic lodges were
represented at Saturday’s
event, as well as the Per-
ryville Police Department,
Perry County Sheriff’s Of-
fice, the hospital, a dental of-
fice, and several other local
volunteers.

BEDTIME?
One of the annual high-
lights of Mayfest is the bed
races sponsored by Main
Street Signs.
During the contest, teams
of five push a large bed
around an obstacle course,
completing challenges along
the way.
This year, five teams took
on the challenge — the Cham-
ber of Commerce, Crossfit of
Perryville, the Perryville Fire
Department, Garris Motive,
and a team made of random
individuals from the crowd.
Once on the course, con-
testants had to hop-scotch
while carrying an ping-pong
ball in a spoon, bob for plas-
tic fish in a metal wash buck-
et, pop a balloon between
two members, wear a stove-
pipe hat and use an umbrella
to pop a number of water bal-
loons,and don a dress and wig
while belting out the chorus to
“Let It Go” from the animat-
ed movie Frozen before rac-
ing across the finish line.
Garris Motive’s Team
Aladdin, led by Aladdin Gar-
ris, won the event. Other
Team Aladdin members were
Nick Spitler, Brandie Gar-
ris, Amy Gerler and Shawn
Moore.
YOU LOOK FAMILIAR
This year’s costume con-
test was also a popular attrac-
tion.
Several kids in three age
groups were judged on the
Disney character costumes,
which included everything
from Disney princesses, vil-
lains and sidekicks to a spe-
cial appearance by a pint-
sized Iron Man.
Brody Schremp, dressed
as Pinocchio, won the first-
place prize in the 3-year-old
and under category during the
costume contest on Saturday.
In the 4-6 year-old divi-
sion, Clara Allen, dressed
as Sebastian from the Little
Mermaid, took the top prize,
while big sister, Lucy Allen,
7, dressed as Ursula from
The Little Mermaid, won first
place in the 7-10 year-old age
division.
