February 2019

Onward and Upward

Well, we have completed another suc-
cessful year here in the Youth Outreach
Unit, and for 2019, the best is yet to
come. So, Happy New Year is definitely in
order!

We have some new faces that have an-

swered the challenge to join the Dallas
Police Explorers and veteran Explorers
that have stepped up to lead. In 2019 the
Explorers program will still have the
same mission: to lead, to teach, to inspire
our community, and have some fun along
the way. January we started our new
year off the with participating the Martin
Luther King Jr. Parade.

Also for January, our Explorer Advi-

sors have returned to the classroom by
teaching in David W. Carter High School's
and Sunset High School's criminal justice
program. Weekly Explorer meetings have
also resumed. As the year unfolds we will
have more events to announce. So lets
make 2019 the best yet!

Citizenship Award
Happy New Year! This month, our Jr Explorers received their Citi-
zenship Award pin which is the first-time award pins have been
issued since the start of our program in 2015. To receive this
prestigious award, the Jr Explorers needed to know the history of
the US Flag, learn how to fold the flag, under-
stand the rights and duties of Americans, com-
plete a community service project, and pre-
sent their American Hero Project. These Jr Ex-
plorers displayed outstanding character of Citizenship which will last a life
time. Congratulations to all who earned their pin! Now our Junior Explorers
will be working on earning their First Responder pin!

2019 83rd Annual Regional Golden Gloves Tournament

The Dallas Police Activities League Boxing Teams enjoyed some strong
showings at the 83rd Annual Regional Golden Gloves Tournament on Janu-
ary 21-25 at the Hela Shrine Temple in Garland, Texas. There have been 14
bouts from both gyms with a total of nine winners. We look forward to our
boxers going to the State Golden Gloves Tournament February 25th to the
28th in Ft. Worth Texas continuing the tradition that Arch Ward, sports edi-
tor of the Chicago Tribune started in 1927. The National Golden
Gloves contest began in 1962 and continues to be the most highly regarded
amateur boxing tournament in the United States.

Manager’s Message
The New Year is absolutely in full swing. I am excited about what is being planned and how eve-
ryone is working hard to ensure we are serving our youth, their parents, and our city. I was able
to sit in on the newly formed P.A.T.S.Y (Parents. Advisor. Team. Supporting. Youth) orientation
and am thankful for the many parents that attended and that continuously support our efforts.
I’m looking forward to an amazing 2019 alongside the Youth Outreach Unit. @JoliDPD
