Essential Question(s):
Subject: Language Arts
Topic: Character Traits 1. What is a trait?
Standard(s):
§110.7. English Language Arts and Reading Lesson Objectives:
Summary of Tasks
2. Pass out paper dolls and have students decorate and write what they think their traits are. Once they
are finished I will have them share their doll with the class.
3. Discuss the difference between an inside and outside trait. Discuss which traits they feel are the most
important to possess; what is the first thing that people notice- inside or outside traits; how can we
develop our inside traits?
4. On the Interactive whiteboard I will bring up the inside/outside worksheet and have an open class
discussion to fill out the worksheet with words from their own paper doll.
5. Introduce Reading response worksheet and explain the different sections of the worksheet. Make sure
the students understand that our feelings, words, and actions contribute to who we are as a person. It is
also a major way in which others will judge us.
6. I will then divide students into groups of three with each group being assigned one of the major
characters from the novel. They will then work to complete the different sections of the worksheet.
Once completed they will share with the class.
7. I will share examples of three awards I chose for the three major characters and then challenge the
three groups to come up with their own award certificates based on their previous study of character
traits. The students will then use their computer lab time to create their own award certificate for the
character that their group has chosen.
8. Once all the awards are finished then we will share our findings. Once all the groups have gone, then I
will then display their awards on a given bulletin board.
Differentiated Instruction:
1. Have the more advanced students pick out an additional character. They will then use that character to
fill out another reading response worksheet.
2. For ESL students I will give them a magazine to use to cut out pictures or words of the various character
traits. They will then glue them to a word web about their given character. This will then make it a visual
character collage.
3. For special education students I will personally work with them one on one or small group and discuss
what makes them unique from the other students in the classroom. They will then make a paper doll to
showcase their own unique traits.

Character Without Question Award
Giorgio, as a young man, grew up quite poor and had very little time to devote to anything other
then working to earn money for his family. He found a pair of tap shoes on a garbage can and
asked the owner if her could have them. He took them home and hid them so that no one could
see him when he secretly put them on and tapped to escape into a world of happiness. At the age
of thirteen he secretly wrote an autobiography that showed how his family ignored and placed no
value on him as an individual member. His son, Leo found the shoes and diary in their attic and
secretly read it and put on the tap shoes when no one, like his father, could observe him. He is
awarded the character without question because he came to realize that his own son felt
unimportant and unloved since he did not have the talent of his other siblings that the father
seemed to admire. After watching his son perform in a small role in a school play he told him
how much he loved and was proud of him and his son was filled with pride because of his
fathers’ final acceptance of him. Who knew that a bond between a son and his father could grow
from a discarded pair of tap shoes and a hidden, treasured autobiography.
Loyalty Award
Leo only found happiness when he escaped to his dream world. Ruby, his best friend kept him in
the real world by always encouraging and telling him that he was talented in acting and had a
family that loved him in their own way. When others at school would belittle or taunt him that he
had no talent and would only have bit parts in the school plays she told him to not let others
guide him his future or cause him to doubt himself. She told him that no matter where or when
she would always be there for him as a true friend.
Spotlight Award
Leo felt his family did not love or respect him as proven by the nicknames they called him,
“sardine or “fogboy”. Leo loved to act and spend time with his father but neither proved
successful until he found his fathers tap shoes and autobiography. He would envision himself in
a make-believe world as a Oscar winning actor and being interviewed by major television
stations for his acting prowess. Leo earns the spotlight award for having the smallest part in the
school play, but determined to give it his very best. After the play his father and other family
members were surprised when after the final curtain call he put on the tap shoes and danced for a
few moments on the stage. His father hugged and told him how proud he was and that his talent
deserved the same recognition that his siblings received. He made Leo the proudest when he let
him know like father like son.
