Music Is a Language By Victor Wooten - Part 7 (English)
It doesn’t matter how great I am as a bassist or any instrument, it doesn’t
matter how great I am. We can put 5 of the worlds’ best musicians on this
stage but if we’re great separate from each other, it is going to sound horrible.
But if we listen to each other and play together. Individually we don’t have to
be as great, and it will sound much better.

I was invited a couple years in a row to go to Stanford in California and put

together a musical team to address the incoming Freshman class and we were
able to use music to give them an idea of what the next 4 years of their life
might be like, and it was fun using music to do it because music is a way that I
can talk about anything that could be kind of touchy: politics, racism, equality,
inequality, religion. I can do it through music and I am still safe, you know.

But we were able to pick someone out of the audience who had never played an
instrument before. Usually it was a female, have her come up, we strap a bass
around her neck and then I would get the band playing, and as soon as the
band starts playing, that person starts doing this, all right? (no caso a pessoa
começa a se mexer por causa do ritmo da música). And I say "that’s music!".

If you listen to that bass like any instrument in a music store, when it is sitting
there it doesn’t make a sound, so if you want music to come out of that, you
gotta put it there and that groove that is in your neck you just gotta put it in
that instrument.

So, I just had her with the left hand squeeze neck, because everyone knows
how to hold an instrument, that’s not new. Squeeze it and then let your right
hand dance on the string, and she starts bouncing on that note and the band
kicks up around her, all of a sudden she is a bassist, more so, she’s a musician.
A dancer never has to ask questions before they dance, a singer doesn’t usually
have to ask “what key are we in?”. Musicians have to ask too many questions.

Não importa o quão bom eu sou como um baixista ou qualquer instrumento,
não importa o quão bom eu sou. Nós podemos colocar 5 dos melhores músicos
do mundo neste palco mas se nós somos bons separados uns dos outros, isso
soará horrível. Mas se nós escutarmos uns aos outros e tocarmos juntos.
Individualmente nós não precisamos ser igualmente bons, e soará muito
melhor.

Eu fui convidado alguns anos em sequência para ir a Stanford na Califórnia e

reunir uma equipe musical para falar para a nova turma de calouros, e nós
fomos capazes de usar a música para dar a eles uma ideia de que os próximos 4
anos da vida deles poderiam se parecer, e foi divertido usar música para fazer
isso porque música é uma maneira pela qual eu posso falar sobre qualquer
coisa que possa ser meio que sensível: política, racismo, igualdade,
desigualdade, religião. Eu posso fazer isso através da música e eu ainda estou
seguro, sabe.

Mas nós fomos capazes de pegar alguém da audiência que nunca tinha tocado
um instrumento antes. Normalmente era uma mulher, fazíamos ela chegar
perto, nós pendurávamos um baixo ao redor do pescoço dela e então eu fazia a
banda tocar, e logo que a banda começa a tocar, aquela pessoa começa a fazer
isso, certo? (no caso a pessoa começa a se mexer por causa do ritmo da música)
E eu digo “isso é música!”.

Se você escutar aquele baixo como qualquer instrumento em uma loja de

música, quando ele está sentado lá, ele não emite nenhum som, então se você
quer que música saia daquilo, você tem que colocar a música lá e aquele
“groove/ritmo” que está no seu pescoço você simplesmente tem que colocar
isso naquele instrumento.

Então, eu simplesmente fiz com que ela com a mão esquerda apertasse o braço
do instrumento, porque todo mundo sabe como segurar um instrumento, isso
não é novo. Aperte isso e então deixe sua mão direita dançar na corda, e ela
começa a bater/tocar naquela nota e a banda começa a tocar ao redor dela, de
repente ela é uma baixista, mais ainda, ela é uma música (profissão). Um
dançarino nunca tem que fazer perguntas antes de dançar, um cantor
normalmente não tem que perguntar “em que tom nós estamos?”. Músicos
têm que fazer perguntas demais.
