Homework 1

Due in Class on August 30th

1) How many tons of CO2 are produced annually by a conventional automobile? How many tons of
CO2 are produced annually by an electric vehicle. List all assumptions and cite any source you
used.

2) Consider a river flowing toward a lake at an average velocity of 3 m/s at a rate of 500 m3/s at a
location 90 m above the lake surface. Determine the total mechanical energy of the river water
per unit mass and the power generation potential of the entire river at that location.

3) Water is being heated in a closed pan on top of a range while being stirred by a paddle wheel.
During the process, 30 kJ of heat is transferred to the water, and 5kJ of heat is lost to the
surrounding air. The paddle-wheel work amounts to 500 N*m. Determine the final energy of the
system if its initial energy is 10 kJ.

4) A refrigerator steadily receives a power input of 0.15 kW while rejecting energy by heat transfer
to the surroundings at a rate of 0.6 kW. Determine the rate at which energy is removed by heat
transfer from the refrigerated space, in kW, and the refrigerators coefficient of performance.

5) A window-mounted room air conditioner removes energy by heat transfer from a room and
rejects energy by heat transfer to the outside air. For steady operation, the air conditioner cycle
requires a power input of 0.434 kW and has a coefficient of performance of 6.22. Determine the
rate that energy is removed from the room air, in kW. If electricity is valued at $0.1/kW∙h,
determine the cost of operation for 24 hours of operation.

6) A heat pump maintains a dwelling at 68F. When operating steadily, the power input to the heat
pump is 5 hp, and the heat pump receives energy by heat transfer from 55F well water at a rate
of 500 BTU/min. (a)Determine the coefficient of performance (b) Evaluating electricity at $10 per
kWh determine the cost of electricity in a month when the heat pump operates for 300 hours.
