Topic: Transformer
1. why transformer is rated in KVA?
2. What are constant and variable parameters of transformer?
3. Can a transformer works on DC power supply? If yes than how and if not than why?
4. Why High Voltage (HV) winding keep low volatge (LV) winding above in transformer?
5. What are the losses that occur in transformer & where?
) Since transformer has two losses i.e. copper and core losses and copper losses are current dependent where as core
losses are voltage dependent. So to include both losses, transformer is rated in KVA i.e. kilo volt ampere.
2) Frequency is one of constant parameter for transformer because frequency remains same on both primary and
secondary side. Variable parameters are current and voltage.
3) No, it cannot work because DC has zero frequency. So if DC is supplied than transformer inductive reactance
becomes zero as XL= 2*PI*F*L. So there will be no opposition to current. Very high current will flow in primary
winding that will damage it.
5) Losses are core losses & copper losses. Core losses occurs in core of transformer. Core losses are further divided
into hysterisis and eddy current losses. Copper losses occurs in both primary and seconday winding. They are
because of current flowing in windings. Copper losses are variable losses where as core are constant/fixed losses.
