PERSONALITY TRAITS : CHARACTER AND INTEREST

I. Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the participants must have:
 Know the personality traits, character and interest
 Understand aspects of personality, character and interest
 Explain the role of character and interest in personality
 Explain what is character theory and interest

II. Introduction

Just like real people, literary characters have behaviors, attitudes, traits,
and beliefs that give them a unique personality. These can be surface
characteristics, like personality or physical traits – or they can be deeply-held
values and morals. Character, on the other hand, takes for longer to puzzle
out. It includes traits that reveal themselves only on specific-and often
uncommon-circumstances, traits like honesty, virtue and kindness.

III. Discussion
Personality according to Atkinson (1996) is the distinctive and
characteristic patterns of thoughts, emotions and behaviour that define an
individual’s personal style of interacting with the physical and social
environment. It is also defined as the configuration of characteristics and
ways of behaving which describe an individual’s unique adjustment to his
environment (Gaerlan, 1994). It includes characterisitcs that are important in
a person’s adjustment and maintenance of self-respect.
Character
Character is how one acts when no one is watching (e.g. Giving money to
someone who is in a crisis without letting them know that you helped)

Erving Goffman’s Character Theory

A character theory is basically analysing a character upon role within
context of media, such as print or electronic media text or productions such
as films and play, is useful for analysing and understanding media in which
people take on the role of an actor or social actor. Character theories are
often based on stereotypes and the difficult characteristics that make them
up can either be used for positive or negative purposes. In terms Goffman’s
theory, he suggested that there are four main types of broad characters in a
media text or production. Erving Goffman was a Sociologist who developed
Character Theory, which compose of characters.

The Four Character Types

1. The protagonist
2. The deuterogamist
3. The bit player
4. The fool

Abilities, attitudes, and interests

Any description of personality characteristics is incomplete if it does not

include such things as abilities, attitudes, and interest. It may, for example,
be characteristics of a person that he is intelligent, conservative, and sports-
loving. Such characteristics, in fact, are usually included in the list of traits
used for rating personality.

Abilities, attitudes, and interest, however are different from other

personality traits in two important respects. First, they are more often
measured by objectives test, that is, by test that can be mechanically scored
and that make no use of the judgments
