Objective of the lesson

At the end of the class, the students will construct sentences

using the reported speech with different verb tenses

Reported Speech (indirect speech)

It is used to report what another person said, without using the

speaker’s exact words

We usually use a reporting verb (e.g. say, tell, ask, etc.) and then
change the tense of what was actually said in direct speech.

Jane (on Sunday): I will wait here.

Susie (on Monday reports what Jane said on Sunday):
Jane said that she would wait there.
Direct speech uses quotation marks

Indirect speech reports what others say without using the same words

Reported verbs such as ‘say’ and ‘tell’ are used

In reported speech we change tenses, pronouns and time expressions

 Rewrite these quotations using reported speech

“Honest disagreement is often a good sign of progress”
