FOR KNEE REPLACEMENT

POSTOPERATIVE EXERCISES

PHASE 1 –to start before getting out of bed


Breathing exercises
• Take a slow deep breath through nose.

Hold it for the count of 5 . And
slowly exhale it through your
mouth
• Repeat 6 times every hour
• After 5 deep breaths have a strong Fig 19- Performing deep

Foot and Ankle pumps do
• Move feet up and down to move ankles.
• Do 20 times every hour.

Thigh tightening Fig 20 – Exercising feet


• Lie down. Slowly tighten the muscle on your thigh of operated leg.
• Hold for the count of 10, and then relax
• Repeat 10 -15 times every hour.

Buttock tightening
• With your legs straight, squeeze your bottom muscles together.
• Hold for the count of 10, and then relax
• Repeat 10 -15 times every hour

PHASE II –to start on the day you get out of bed


Bed exercises:Repeat 10-15 times twice a day
Straight Leg Raise

 Lie on your back with your non-surgical leg bent.


 Tighten your knee and slowly raise your operated leg to the level
of bent knee.
 Hold for the count of 10, and then relax Fig 23-Straight leg

Heel slides
• Gently slide your heel towards your bottom (bending the hip and
knee).
• Return leg to starting position.
• Repeat 10 - 15 times twice per day

Hip Adduction
• Lie down. Keep your toes pointed towards ceiling.
• Move your operated leg to side. Slowly return to
starting position, relax
• Repeat 10 - 15 times, twice a day.Fig 25- Hip Adduction

Knee extensions
• Keep a rolled towel under your Knee and straighten
your leg by lifting your heel up off the bed.
• Hold for the count of 5 and straighten the knee as much as possible.

Sitting knee exercises- Fig 26- Knee extensions


Start these exercises when you are able to sit supported/unsupported.
Long arc quads-
 Sit on edge of bed or on chair.
 Slowly straighten your operated leg as much as you can. Hold for the
count of 5.
 Slowly bend your leg and bring back it to starting position
 Repeat it 10 times. Do 2 sessions per day

Knee slides-
 Sit on edge of bed or on chair.
 Slowly slide your leg forward as much you can.
 Hold for the count of 10.
 Then slowly slide leg backward and relax.
 Repeat it 10 times. Do 2 sessions per day

FOR HIP REPLACEMENT

POSTOPERATIVE EXERCISES

PHASE 1 –to start before getting out of bed

PHASE II –to commence on the day you get out of bed


Bed exercises: Three Times a Day
Hip Abduction
• Slide your leg straight out to the side. Make sure toes point
towards the ceiling.
• Repeat 10 - 15 three times a day.
Hip Abduction
Hip and Knee bends on board
• Gently slide your heel towards your bottom (bending the hip
and knee). Your knee should not roll out. Return leg to
starting position.
• Repeat 10 - 15 times three times a day
Quads over a roll Fig 27-Hip and knne bends
• Place rolled towel, pillow, or coffee can under the knee; raise
heel off bed to straighten knee.
• Hold 3 seconds.
• Repeat 10 - 15 times three times a day

Bridging
• Bend up the un-operated leg, and push down through it to help
lift your bottom up off the bed.
• Hold 3 seconds.
• Repeat 10 - 15 times

PHASE III -as you improve, you will progress you to standing exercises
Standing Exercises: Two Times a Day

Continue with phase ii exercises twice daily


1. Hip Extension
• Stand with your hands on a table or rail for
balance:
• Keep trunk straight and take operated leg
directly back.
• Keep your operated leg as straight as you
cantighten the buttocks.
• Hold 3 seconds, then return to starting
position.
• Repeat 10 - 15 times

2. Hip Extension Swings
 Keep toes pointing forward and in line
with the other foot. Move your operated
leg out to the side, as far as comfortable.
Then return to starting position.
 Repeat 10 - 15 times

3. Thigh raises
swings
• Stand and hold on to a solid object. Raise up on your toes.
• Hold 5 seconds, then return to starting position.

4. Standing Knee bends

• Stand straight and bend the knee of your operated leg, taking
your heel towards your bottom.
• Hold 5 seconds, then return to starting position
