EXECUTIVE BRIEF

06.12.2007
THE BORNEO TROPICAL RAINFOREST FOUNDATION
Promoting Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development in Borneo’s Tropical Forests
- A response to the Challenges of the 21st Century

BTRF operates as a strictly non-profit organisation under the supervisory authority of the Swiss Department of
Internal Affairs. Its watchwords are integrity and independence - as reflected in the honorary, unpaid status of its
Board executives and a rigorously streamlined infrastructure, which ensures that a maximum of funds can be
applied in their entirety for the immediate benefit of field projects and indigenous communities.

“If this is not done (study and collection of natural history), … future ages will certainly look back upon us as a
people so immersed in the pursuit of wealth as to be blind to higher considerations. They will charge us with having
culpably allowed the destruction of some of those records of Creation which we had it in our power to preserve; and
while professing to regard every living thing as the direct handiwork and best evidence of a Creator, yet, with a
strange inconsistency, seeing many of them perish irrecoverably from the face of the earth, uncared for and
unknown.”
Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) naturalist, evolutionist, geographer and anthropologist. His extensive work in the
Indonesian Archipelago was also a cornerstone of the theory of continental drift, a fact commemorated by the
demarcation of the Wallace Line.

MISSION

The mission of BTRF is to protect and safeguard large areas of tropical rainforest as well as to promote
global responsibility and awareness of the need to participate collectively in the conservation of our
planet’s natural heritage. In order to achieve its mission BTRF has the following main objectives:

To establish and safeguard large protected areas in order to foster conservation of the tropical rainforests of
Borneo and other threatened regions.

To provide efficient management, finance and infrastructure for the strict preservation of such protected
areas as reservoirs of biological diversity for ecological, genetic, economic, scientific and educational
purposes.

To raise awareness of the planetary importance of rainforest protection and its positive impacts for humanity.

APPROACH
In fulfilling its mission and objectives BTRF’s work will be based on the following principles:

To combine biodiversity conservation activities with the promotion of sustainable development activities that
contribute to poverty alleviation and socio-economic development.

To promote constructive co-operation between the range of stakeholders; including Government and regional
authorities, local communities, business and development interests as well as the national and international
scientific and conservation communities.

To seek funding from a variety of sources, including multilateral agencies, development cooperation
agencies and other partners to support strategic development activities and project implementation.

To develop partnerships with leading international institutions working in the field of biodiversity conservation
and sustainable development.

To apply state of the art knowledge and practices to develop a “model case” that can be considered as best
practice in the Sovereign States of Borneo and worldwide on biodiversity conservation and sustainable
development.

To promote and widely communicate the experiences and achievements of its projects as a contribution to
building broader support and recognition for the efforts of Borneo’s Sovereign States to achieve the
objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

To support, facilitate and streamline existing rainforest conservation efforts, rather than rival or detract from
them.

BTRF IS COMMITTED TO:

build on the vast reservoir of goodwill and expertise already present in the field by making available new and
emerging strategies, multi-disciplinary networks, institutional support and sources of funding.
propose rather than impose, unite rather than duplicate.
respect the independence and policy discretions of existing organizations.
address and identify applicable solutions to the problems traditionally hampering the work of environmental
agencies, forest departments, governmental and non-governmental organizations.
PARTNERSHIP

BTRF recognises that for the successful implementation of its programmes, it is critical to work in
partnership.
