talks with Japan a
‘drawn out’ process
The Kremlin on Monday dampened expectations
of any breakthrough at the upcoming summit
between the leaders of Russia and Japan, saying
striking a peace deal would be a very “drawn out”
process.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japa-
nese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will meet Tues-
day in Moscow, part of revived negotiations aim-
ing to formally end World War II.
The peace process stalled in the 1950s due to a
dispute over the Kuril islands.
“The president has said from the start that the
issue of signing a peace agreement with Japan
will be very drawn out in terms of time,” Putin’s
spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists hours
before Abe’s expected touchdown in the Russian
capital.
“The talks are in their initial stage,” he said.
Tokyo claims that they own the so-called
southern Kurils, a string of islands just north of

In a vote of confidence in the nation’s fresh round
of reform and opening-up, foreign companies –
from global consultancies to entertainment gi-

China’s Hainan Province in 2018, eyeing policy
support expected from efforts to build a free trade

In 2018, Hainan attracted $733.05 million in
FDI, up 112.7 percent from a year earlier, accord-

on Monday, citing official figures.
During the year, 167 companies involving for-

percent year-on-year, the report said.
Most of the FDI came in after the central gov-
ernment announced in April 2018 that it would
build the whole island of Hainan into a pilot,

 Xinjiang’s millennial entrepreneurs make

the most of the Internet age

Uyghur Deals

By Yin Lu and Zhang Xinyuan

Y
oung entrepreneurs from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autono-
mous Region are exploring new business areas such as
e-commerce, online education, digital solutions, the In-
ternet of Things and more. They are utilizing their talents
in business hubs all over the country, and some are even
planning to expand overseas.
While Xinjiang is positioned as one of the “core areas” of the “One
Belt, One Road” initiative, its young people are striving to realize their
dreams, taking advantage of the resources and opportunities offered by
the Internet age.
