This thesis develops a predictive model for liquid dispersion in counter-current gas-liquid flows in packed beds. Experimental studies using gamma ray tomography measured the spatial distribution of liquid holdup in a packed column. An advection-diffusion model was used to characterize liquid dispersion and calculate a "spread factor". For a structured packing, spread factor was insensitive to gas and liquid flowrates, but for a random packing it depended on flowrates. A Eulerian model coupled with a porous medium description was also developed and showed good agreement with experimental pressure drops and holdup values.
