Students can enter two contests,
and depending on their interests,
strengths and passion, can
choose between a written essay
or a video PSA (or do both!).
The first contest is sponsored
locally, which increases your
chances of winning. The City
Club of Cleveland is currently
sponsoring the The Hope and
St anl ey Adel st ein Free Speech
Essay Cont est , which is seeking
500-1,000 word essays from
high school students in
Northeast Ohio that discuss the
role of free speech in the 21st
century. Essays should pull from
personal experience, current
events, history, politics, art,
anything really so long as they
are backed up with evidence.
Essays will be judged on their
clarity, content, originality, and
significance. Three winners from
11/ 12 grade and three winners
from 9/ 10 grade will be chosen.
Check out some articles on the
topic, get familiar with it, and
start thinking about how you will
set your essay apart from the

teen. But facts have shown it
?Social media platforms are no
longer just a way to connect with
friends, but are increasingly used
as a way to share news and
discuss current events. Platforms
such as Facebook and Twitter
have come under fire for failing to
protect users from hate speech,
while simultaneously facing
backlash for failing to protect free
speech. Given these contradictory
perspectives and the increased
prevalence of social media,
should social media platforms
weigh the value of ensuring the
safety and accountability of users
versus ensuring the free speech of
users??

The second contest is a video
contest sponsored by Discovery
and Toyota. Learning to drive is
one of the coolest times for a

You have the power to inspire
your fellow teens, maybe
better than a teacher or a
parent can, because you know
what messages will be the
most powerful. Create a
30-60 second video for your
fellow teen drivers that
highlights the importance of
safe teen driving and you
could win $15,000, or one of
14 other prizes! 1st place
winner receives $15,000 and
a chance to work with a
Discovery film crew to
re-shoot your video into a
TV-ready PSA. There are 14
additional prizes ranging
from $10,000 to $1,000.
