Google Maps

Google My Maps allows you to create simple maps that we can use on our site. You will need a
Google account to access the service.

How to use:
• Go to https://www.google.com/mymaps and log into your Google account.

• Hit the "Create a new map" option to start a new map.

• You'll start off with a blank map. First, click "Untitled map" in the upper left-hand corner to
change the title of the map. This will appear in the map window when it is finally embedded in
the article.

• After you change the title, zoom the map in to the area you'll be dealing with by searching an
address or using the plus-minus buttons in the lower right.

• To add a point to the map, click the point button at the top, right below the search bar. Then
click an area on the map to add the point. The map autosaves when you add things to it.

• You then have the option to name the point, provide a description, and add photos or video.

• Hit "Save" when you're done.

CUSTOMIZATION

• In addition to photos or video, you can go back and click on the point to change the color and
icon by selecting the paint bucket next to the icon in the list on the left.

• If you want to create a line, click the line button at the top of the page, and select "Add line or
shape".

• Click where you want the line to begin, and click along the path you want the line to follow.
Click on the latest dot that was created in the line to end it. You can then name it and give it a
description, just like a point.

• You can click the paint bucket next to the line in the left list to change the color, transparency
and border width.

• If you connect the line back to the dot where it began, it will draw a polygonal shape over the
area where you ran the line. You can click the paint bucket next to the polygon in the left list to
change the color, transparency and border width.
ADD TO YOUR STORY

• If you're ready to embed the map, you first have to click the "Share" button in the left-hand list.

• Click "Change" to the right of where it says "Private - Only you can access", and change the
setting to "Public on the web".

• Save and exit the window, then click on the three dots running vertically to the right of the
"Share" button.

• Select "Embed on my site," and copy the iframe code that is there.

• **Note: You need to make changes to the embed code to get it to fit properly in our articles.
Change the value of the "width" part of the code (highlighted in yellow in the example below)
from 640 to 500.**

<iframe src="https://www.google.com/maps/d/embed?mid=1GSrfNAVS7GBfI9m9fy298tvny3g"
width="640" height="480"></iframe>

• Go into the Presto article in which you want to embed the map, and click in the body of the
article to add an asset.

• Select the "embed" button and then click on "I want to add an HTML Embed instead" at the
bottom."
• Put a title in the top box and paste the code into the bottom box (don’t forget to change the
width!), then click "Add Embed" at the bottom.

• The map will appear anywhere you place the HTML asset inside the story.
