testing on ferromagnetic materials, for surface and sub surface discontinuities. The
procedure applies to the testing of butt welds, fillet welds, plates and tubulars etc.

3.0 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION AND RESPONSIBILITY

3.1 ASNT NDT Level III shall be responsible for the administration of this procedure
specification.
3.2 ASNT NDT MT Level Tester certified under PT. BONNE INDO TEKNIK’s written
practice for personnel Qualification and certification in NDT, Document No.
BIT/MT-AWS D1.1/01 Rev. 0 may carry out the test.

4.0 MAGNETIZATION EQUIPMENT / TECHNIQUES

4.1 Yoke Techniques
AC magnaflux. ESX. Parker – Research or Equivalent magnetic articulated yoke
shall be used localized magnetization of small and large component with wet
magnetic particles. Yoke shall be calibrated at least twice a year, or whenever it has
been subjected to major electric repair or damage. If it has not been in use for a year
or more, calibration shall be done prior to first use.

5.0 MAGNETIC PARTICLES

5.1 Wet magnetic Particles
Color contrast non-fluorescent wet magnetic particles suspended in a vehicle (oil
water, kerosene) or in pressurized cans shall be used. The mixing and concentration
of wet magnetic particle is not permitted.
Wet magnetic particles may be applied by spraying or flowing over the areas to be
inspected during magnetization.
Test surface temperature shall not exceed 50 degrees C or limitation set by
manufacture.

6.0 SURFACE PREPARATION

6.1 This surface of the part plus adjacent area (at least 1” on boat sides) to be tested shall
be essentially clean, dry and free of contaminants such as oil, grease, loose sand,
lint, thick paint (more than to mils / 50.8 m), welding flux and spatter. Mechanical
cleaning, chemical cleaning and sand blasting may be employed. Apply and evenly
thin layer of white contrast paint when wet magnetic particle issued.

7.0 MAGNETIZATION
7.1 A ferromagnetic material can be magnetized by passing and electric current trough
the material by an external source. Discontinuities may occur in any orientation, it
may be necessary to magnetic the part or area of interest twice or more sequentially
in different direction to approximately 90o to those of the first examination
7.2 The adequacy and direction of the magnetic field shall be verified using a magnetic
field indicator, with the exception of the magnetic flow (yoke) technique whereby
direction only may be verified. The adequacy of magnetic flow equipment shall be
verified using the lift test detailed I ASME BPV Section V SE – 709 Paragraph 14,
2004 Edition and 2005 addenda.

8.0 EXAMINATION COVERAGE

All examination shall be conducted with sufficient field overlap to ensure 100% coverage
at the required sensitivity.

9.0 SAFETY PRECAUTION

9.1 Pay highly attention to yoke electric shock, fire due to MT chemical being used, in
halation toxic material and magnetic particle.
9.2 Use appropriate personnel protective equipment.

10.0 TECHNIQUE OF OPERATION

10.1 Wet Magnetization Techniques
The surface of part being tested is bathed or sprayed with wet magnetic particles
and terminating the particle application simultaneously with at least 0.5 second.
Inspect the test surface while the west particles are following away and magnetizing
current is still on.

11.0 MAGNETIC STRENGTH CALIBRATION

11.1 Yoke magnetization Wet Magnetization Techniques

When using AC, the electromagnetic yokes should have a lifting force of at least 4.5
Kgs (10 Lbs) is used at 2 – 6” Yoke pole leg spacing and recorded as in appendix

12.0 INTERPRETATION AND RECORDING OF INDICATION

12.1 All indication shall be evaluated which is evaluated which is illuminated by

daylight or artificial light to a minimum level 1000 Lux (100 Fe) whether it is
relevant or non-relevant indication. The light source and level intensity is recorded
on MT report. Any indication which is believed to be non relevant shall be regarded
as defect until the indication is eliminated by surface conditioning or if it is
demonstrated to be non-relevant.
12.2 With Non-fluorescent, Wet particles
To determine the indication is relevant or non-relevant, remove the particles
attracted to the field leakage, after switching off the current. Visually inspect for
surface irregularities, then re-magnetize, apply particles are less lightly head.
12.3 When required, indication can be recorded by means of photograph s or sketch.

13.0 TYPICAL MAGNETIC PARTICLE INDICATIONS

Surface discontinuities with few exception procedure sharp and distinct magnetic particle
indications.
Near Surface discontinuities on the other hand produce less distinct of fuzzy magnetic
particle indications in comparison to surface discontinuities the magnetic particle
indication are board rather than sharp and the particles are less lightly held

14.0 EVALUATION OF SYSTEM PERFORMANCE / SENSITIVITY

14.1 The performance/sensitivity of test system can be evaluated by one of the following
methods.
14.2 Artificial test part with discontinuities introduced like field indicator.
14.3 The test part should be magnetically same materials as the material of part being
tested example is the test Ring Specimen.
14.4 Magnetic field indicator
Magnetic field indicator (Pie Indicator or Burmah Castrol Type I but upon the
client) may be used as convenient rough check on adequacy and direction of part
magnetization but not as quantitative indicator of field strength or distribution.
Example of field indicators is a copper faced pie type (where a distinct line need to
be seen when used)

15.0 MARKING AND RECORDING

15.1 Where necessary for repaired procedures, the position of flaws may be marked on
the tested surface by a method which will not adversely effect that surface.

15.2 Indication shall be recorded and reported (see section 14 above) according to
classification.
15.3 “Crack and Cracklike Flaws” – position, size, orientation and type.
15.4 “Non relevant indication” – due to spurious effect, eg magnetic writing, changes in
section manufacturing marks, boundaries etc. Must be stringenthly tested prior to
confirmation by PT or other suitable NDT methods as Non Relevant. Wherever
practicable, these indications shall be dressed for confirmation as Non – Relevant.

16.0 POST CLEANING AND DEMAGNETIZATION

16.1 Post cleaning shall be carried out in case where residual or surface contrast
enhancement chemical for ferromagnetic particle could interfere with subsequent
processing service requirement.
Brushing and wiping of solvent damped rag may be employed in cleaning the part.
16.2 Demagnetization of part after test may be necessary but this will be only carried
out where specified by client and included in the contract agreed. It shall be carried
out to one techniques detailed in ASME BPV Section V SE – 709 Paragraph 18,
2004 Edition and 2005 Addenda.

17.0 TESTING PROCEDURE TECHNIQUE

17.1 The technique to carry out MT is detailed in separate techniques sheets. See
appendix 4. Techniques Sheet No. TS-01 and TS-03.
17.2 When required the techniques may be qualified on site during production test.

18.0 REPORTING
All MT shall be reported in standard format (Appendix 5) accompanied with sketches of
the part being tested and location of indication, if any. The report shall be submitted to
client and copy maintained by PT. BONNE INDO TEKNIK. The client is responsible for
the safe keeping and distribution of the report.

19.0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
