1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This procedure specification describes the techniques for wet magnetic particles
testing on ferromagnetic materials, for surface and sub surface discontinuities. The
procedure applies to the testing of butt welds, fillet welds, plates and tubulars etc.

7.0 MAGNETIZATION
7.1 A ferromagnetic material can be magnetized by passing and electric current trough
the material by an external source. Discontinuities may occur in any orientation, it
may be necessary to magnetic the part or area of interest twice or more sequentially
in different direction to approximately 90o to those of the first examination
7.2 The adequacy and direction of the magnetic field shall be verified using a magnetic
field indicator, with the exception of the magnetic flow (yoke) technique whereby
direction only may be verified. The adequacy of magnetic flow equipment shall be
verified using the lift test detailed I ASME BPV Section V SE – 709 Paragraph 14,
2004 Edition and 2005 addenda.
When using AC, the electromagnetic yokes should have a lifting force of at least 4.5
Kgs (10 Lbs) is used at 2 – 6” Yoke pole leg spacing and recorded as in appendix

14.1 The performance/sensitivity of test system can be evaluated by one of the following
methods.
14.2 Artificial test part with discontinuities introduced like field indicator.
14.3 The test part should be magnetically same materials as the material of part being
tested example is the test Ring Specimen.
14.4 Magnetic field indicator
Magnetic field indicator (Pie Indicator or Burmah Castrol Type I but upon the
client) may be used as convenient rough check on adequacy and direction of part
magnetization but not as quantitative indicator of field strength or distribution.
Example of field indicators is a copper faced pie type (where a distinct line need to
be seen when used)
15.2 Indication shall be recorded and reported (see section 14 above) according to
classification.
15.3 “Crack and Cracklike Flaws” – position, size, orientation and type.
15.4 “Non relevant indication” – due to spurious effect, eg magnetic writing, changes in
section manufacturing marks, boundaries etc. Must be stringenthly tested prior to
confirmation by PT or other suitable NDT methods as Non Relevant. Wherever
practicable, these indications shall be dressed for confirmation as Non – Relevant.
16.1 Post cleaning shall be carried out in case where residual or surface contrast
enhancement chemical for ferromagnetic particle could interfere with subsequent
processing service requirement.
Brushing and wiping of solvent damped rag may be employed in cleaning the part.
16.2 Demagnetization of part after test may be necessary but this will be only carried
out where specified by client and included in the contract agreed. It shall be carried
out to one techniques detailed in ASME BPV Section V SE – 709 Paragraph 18,
2004 Edition and 2005 Addenda.
17.1 The technique to carry out MT is detailed in separate techniques sheets. See
appendix 4. Techniques Sheet No. TS-01 and TS-03.
17.2 When required the techniques may be qualified on site during production test.
18.0 REPORTING
All MT shall be reported in standard format (Appendix 5) accompanied with sketches of
the part being tested and location of indication, if any. The report shall be submitted to
client and copy maintained by PT. BONNE INDO TEKNIK. The client is responsible for
the safe keeping and distribution of the report.

INSPECTION SEQUENCE:
1. Remove slag, weld spatters and other debris from weld surface
2. Spray white paint on test surface (weld). Wait till it dries.
3. Place the magnetic Yoke across the weld with pole spacing approximately 6”
4. Apply the magnetic ink between the poles and magnetic short shot the weld while the ink is following away from
the surface, visually inspect for indication.
5. Reposition the magnetic Yoke so that the magnetic field is perpendicular to that of step 3 above. Repeat step 4
above.
6. If indication is observed, determined whether the indication is caused by discontinuity or false/irrelevant
indication.
This can be done by removing the indication, visually examine the surface and re-MT.
Indication can be removed
7. Indication can be removed by light grinding. If indication still appear after grinding, repair procedure from client
shall be followed.
8. Inspection shall be carried out with sufficient lighting.
9. Demagnetization not required.
10. During a subsequent magnetization an overlap of least one-inch over the previous step is necessary to ensure
complete coverage.
