This assignment requires students to identify and reflect upon key trends in
the international tourism and hospitality industries with specific reference to
concepts from the academic literature. The purpose of your report should be
to discuss and summarise theimportance of these issues/trends for the
tourism/hospitality industries (e.g. a particular sector or destination).
You must carry out research on your chosen topic using reliable news, media
and industry sources(e.g. The Caterer, Travel Trade Gazette, UNWTO
reports, Travel Mole, WTTC, Big Hospitality,...) underpinned by relevant
concepts from the academic literature. Your reportmust contain a final
summary/recommendations section, outlining how your analysis of these
trends and/or changes helps us to better understand the workings of the
contemporary tourism and hospitality industries.
Your work should do more than describe what you have read but should offer
an insight into these trends and emergent issues in the tourism and hospitality
industries as if you were advising a client or manager.Module No, TM4002 Term 2 2018/2019
Module name: International Tourism&Hospitaly: Concepts and Approaches
Coursework component: individual Report
To help you identify a relevant issue or challenge, here are some themes to
assist you:
the emergence of new consumer trends/tourist markets
globalisation and hospitality
resort/destination development
tourism impacts (environmental, social and cultural)
political instability and tourism
You do not have to stick to these but please choose two or three issues or
challenges within the theme you choose.
There are two parts to the coursework. The first part is a project/report plan
that will be handed in on Moodle in week 7 of Term 2:
The plan needs to link toyour report topic. This will allow you to communicate
ideas, thoughts and information and integrate the trends of your chosen
industry/destination with academic concepts.
You will need to demonstrate that you have gained enhanced knowledge of
the report topic and started to research the information. Therefore you will
need to state your aim and some objectives, what trends you have read about
and how they link to academic literature, frameworks and theories.
Your project plan can take the form of a mind map or logical bullet points of
ideas. It should be no longer than1 A4 page or 200 words. Clear links have to
be made between theory and industry/news stories.
The second part is your actual report that will be submitted in April
2019.
