What will happen if the syllabus does not exist?

In some countries, the government does not provide schools any curriculum or syllabus.
Instead the teachers need to come along to discuss what they are going to plan for students
throughout the whole year. The teachers must discuss and standardize what the learners
need to be taught in order to avoid confusion.

What is the aim of the syllabus?

KBSR- The English language syllabus for primary schools aims to equip learners with basic
skills and knowledge of the English language so as to enable them to communicate, both
orally and in writing, in and out of school.

KSSR- The English language curriculum for primary schools aims to equip pupils with basic
language skills to enable them to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts that is
appropriate to the pupils’ level of development.

What is the position of English in Malaysia?

English is taught as second language in Malaysian schools and institutions.

How are the objectives for English curriculum expressed?

The objectives for English curriculum expressed at two levels which are terminal objectives
and unit objectives. By the end of the primary school, learners should be able to listen to and
understand simple spoken English in certain given contexts; ask and answer questions,
speak, and express themselves clearly to others using simple language; acquire good
reading habits to understand, enjoy and extract information from a variety of texts; write
legibly and express ideas in simple language; and show an awareness and appreciation of
moral values as well as love for the nation. The unit objectives refer to specific objectives to
be achieved for each year and they are further divided into learning outcomes for all four
language skills and specifications categorised under learning outcomes. The same goes to
KSSR as well. The unit objectives are further divided into content standard and learning
standards. KBSR differs from KSSR in terms of selecting specifications to be taught in a
lesson as learning outcomes in KBSR should be taught according to the levels from level
one to level three. Yet learning standards in KSSR is not categorised according to levels.
