ANSWERING QUESTIONS

TRANSFER ANALYSIS

1. Native language transfer has become and will always be the central concern of second
language acquisition studies. This concept starts with the contrastive analysis
hypothesis then is played down by the creative construction hypothesis and brought
into focus again from a cognitive and development perspective.
Example: Transfer from native language was seen as a matter of habit.
2. The goal of contrastive linguistics to describe these language is for decribing the
languages themselves, or to contribute to the task of foreign language teaching.
The goal of contrastive analysis is to prepare the best teaching materials.
3. The strongest motivation for conducting contrastive analysis involves applied work,
that is to prepare the best teaching materials.
4. It isargued that interference of NL is only one of the source of error. Point out that NL
interference is indeed just one of several other sources. cA arenot for classroom
consumption; they are for the tet book writers and the teachers.
5. The strong version of CA claims that it can predict errors by contrasting the NL with
the TL. The weak version of CA makes the more cautious claim thatit can explain
actually attested errors.
6. Kellerman and Sherwood Smith, “a sub discipline within EA which assumes that
certain errors in learner production are the result of NL transfer”.
7. It refers to the reations that learners perceive to eist between the native language and
the target language, that is, the perceived linguistic distance between NL and second
language forms or structures.
8. Borrowing is a perfomance phenomenon, not a learning process, a feature of language
use and not of language structure.
9. They have found that these influences are not always negative. Instead, they often
reflect the learners effort to use prior knowledge about the language that they know in
order to learn a new language.

10. Gass and Selinker agree that an L2 learners first language (L1) plays a role in the
acquistion of an L2. We know that L2 learners, in contrast to L1 learners, donot start
at the initial state; the L1 is in dome way available to the L2 learner.
