The Priestly Code (P)
God is Elohim
({yÕiholE))
In the Priestly Code (P), Adam and
Eve are created together, both in
the image and likeness of God, and
last after the physical Cosmos,
plants and animals.
Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the
heavens and the earth.
The First Day:
God creates light
1:3 And God said, "Let there be light"; and
there was light.
The Second Day:
God creates the Firmament of Heaven
1:7 And God made the firmament and
separated the waters which were under the
firmament from the waters which were
above the firmament. 1:8 And God called
the firmament Heaven.
The Third Day:
God creates the Earth, Seas, and Vegetation
1:9 And God said, "Let the waters under
the heavens be gathered together into one
place, and let the dry land appear." 1:10
God called the dry land Earth, and the
waters. . .he called Seas.
1:11 And God said: "Let the earth put forth
vegetation, plants yielding seed, and
fruit trees bearing fruit
The Fourth Day:
God creates the Sun, Moon, and Stars
The Fifth Day:
God creates the Fish and Birds
Genesis 2:4-25
The Yahwist (J)
The Lord God is Yahweh Elohim
({yðiholE) hífwhºy)
In the Yahwist (J), Adam is created
first, then the plants and animals.
Eve is created last and specifically
to be Adam’s helpmate and thus
subservient to him.
2:4These are the generations of the heavens
and the earth when they were created.
In The Day that the LORD God
Made the earth and the heavens,
2:5 no plant of the field was yet in the earth
and no herb of the field had yet sprung up-
for the LORD God had not caused it to rain
upon the earth, and there was no man to till
the ground;
The LORD God Creates Adam First
Before the Plants, Animals, and Eve
The Lord God creates Adam first
2:7 then the LORD God formed man of
dust from the ground, and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life; and man became
a living being. 2:8 And the LORD God
planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and
there he put the man whom he had formed.
The Lord God creates Vegetation
2:9 And out of the ground the LORD God
made to grow every tree that is pleasant to
the sight and good for food, the tree of life
also in the midst of the garden, and the tree
of the knowledge of good and evil.

The Sixth Day:
God creates the Animals then Adam, and Eve
Gen 1:24 And God said, Let the earth bring
forth the living creature. . cattle. . .creeping
thing, and beast of the field and it was so.
1:26 Then God said, "Let us make man in
our image, after our likeness; and let them
have dominion over the fish of the sea, and
over the birds of the air, and over the
cattle, and over all the earth, and over
every creeping thing that creeps upon the
earth." 1:27 So God created man in his own
image, in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them. . ."
The Seventh Day:
God rests
2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were
finished, and all the host of them. 2:2 And
on the seventh day God finished his work
which he had done, and he rested on the
seventh day from all his work which he had
done. 2:3 So God blessed the seventh day
and hallowed it, because on it God rested
from all his work which he had done. . .
In the Priestly Code (P),
Adam and Eve are created together,
both in the image and likeness of God,

Genesis 2:4-25
The Yahwist (J)
Adam has already been created first (Gen 2:7)
then Vegetation was created in Gen 2:9
2:15 The LORD God took the man and
put him in the garden of Eden to till it and
keep it. 2:16 And the LORD God
commanded the man, saying, "You may
freely eat of every tree of the garden;
2:17 but of the tree of the knowledge of
good and evil you shall not eat, for in the
day that you eat of it you shall die."
The Lord God creates the Animals
2:18 Then the LORD God said, "It is not
good that the man should be alone; I will
make him a helper fit for him." 2:19 So out
of the ground the LORD God formed every
beast of the field and every bird of the air,
and brought them to the man to see what
he would call them; and whatever the man
called every living creature, that was its
name. 2:20 The man gave names to all
cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to
every beast of the field; but for the man
there was not found a helper fit for him.
The Lord God creates Eve last
2:21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep
to fall upon the man, and while he slept
took one of his ribs and closed up its place
with flesh; 2:22 and the rib which the
LORD God had taken from the man he
made into a woman and brought her to the
man. 2:23 Then the man said, "This at last
is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman, because she was
taken out of Man." 2:24 Therefore a man
leaves his father and his mother and cleaves
to his wife, and they become one flesh. 2:25
And the man and his wife were both naked,
and were not ashamed.
