NEW YORK – About 100 million peo-
ple faced a new challenge after the
whopping East Coast snowstorm: a
gusty deep freeze, topped Saturday by a
wind chill close to minus 100 on New
Hampshire’s Mount Washington that
vied for world’s coldest place.
Jaw-clenching temperatures to start
the weekend throughout the Northeast
hit Burlington, Vermont, at minus 1 and
a wind chill of minus 30. Both Philadel-
phia and New York were shivering at 8
degrees.
And in Hartford, Connecticut, a bru-
tal cold of 10 degrees yielded a wind chill
of minus 20.
On Saturday, winds of more than 90
mph swirled Mount Washington, the
Northeast’s highest peak, at a temper-
ature of minus 37 degrees and a wind
chill of minus 93. It tied for second place
with Armstrong, Ontario, as the coldest
spot in the world.
Boston, at a relatively balmy 11 de-
grees, was wrangling with a different
kind of challenge: a shortage of plumb-
ers as the weather wreaked havoc on
pipes that froze and cracked, Democrat-
ic Mayor Marty Walsh reported.
A 3-foot tidal surge brought on by the
nor’easter along the Massachusetts
coast was the highest recorded in nearly
a century. Residents of Boston and its
suburbs were cleaning up Saturday af-
ter the tide that came in Thursday,
flooding streets and forcing some resi-
dents to be evacuate as the water start-
ed to freeze.
In New Jersey, many people stayed
home instead of dealing with single-
digit temperatures. Others were clean-
ing up from the storm that dropped
more than a foot of snow in some spots
earlier in the week.
“My car felt like an icebox this morn-
ing, even though I had the heat on full
blast,” Julie Williams said as she sipped
coffee inside a Jackson Township con-
venience store. She was headed to work
at a local supermarket, and was expect-
ing it to be packed.

The operators of New York’s John F.
Kennedy International Airport were
struggling to recoup from Thursday’s
storm.
The Port Authority of New York and
New Jersey, which runs the airport, said
it was working with airlines and the
Federal Aviation Administration to limit
flights into Kennedy on Saturday “until
there are adequate gates available to
handle the backlog of flights due to re-
covery of flight schedules in the wake of
Thursday’s storm.”
In Rhode Island, hospitals were
treating dozens of storm-related inju-
ries as the region grits through a deep
freeze that followed a powerful blizzard.

Even more southern locations didn’t
escape the cold; the mercury dipped
into the single digits in Baltimore and
Washington, D.C., during the weekend,
about 20 degrees below normal for this
time of year.
The high winds and frigid temper-
atures prompted several ski resorts to
close some of their lifts. Bolton Valley in
Vermont said there was a general “lack
of demand and enthusiasm from skiers
and riders.” With a temperature of mi-
nus 14 at the summit and minus 11 at the
base, the resort cancelled evening ski-
ing due to a frostbite warning.
In Vermont’s capital city of Montpe-
lier, with the temperature at minus 5
Saturday, business was slow at La Bri-
oche Bakery but soups were a big seller,
said bakery clerk Caroline Cunningham.

Bannon tries to make amends,
says he was targeting Manafort
WASHINGTON – Faced with a grow-
ing backlash, President Donald Trump’s
former chief strategist, Steve Bannon,
released a statement Sunday reaffirm-
ing his support for the commander in
chief and praising Trump’s eldest son as
“both a patriot and a good man.”
Bannon infuriated Trump with com-
ments to author Michael Wolff describ-
ing a June 2016 meeting between Don-
ald Trump Jr., Trump campaign aides
and a Russian lawyer as “treasonous”
and “unpatriotic.”
But Bannon said Sunday that his de-
scription was aimed at former Trump
campaign chairman Paul Manafort,
who also attended, not Trump’s son.
UN envoy says no change in US
position on North Korea talks

that the administration isn’t changing
its conditions regarding talks with
North Korea amid growing tensions over
the North’s nuclear and missile pro-
grams. Nikki Haley made clear that
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would
first need to stop weapons testing for a
“significant amount of time.”
Trump had said Saturday that he was
open to talking to Kim. It appeared to be
a softening of rhetoric. But Haley insist-
ed he was reiterating his past position.
32 missing, Iranian oil tanker
on fire after collision off China
BEIJING – An Iranian oil tanker col-
lided with a bulk freighter and caught
fire off China’s east coast, leaving the
tanker’s entire crew of 32 missing and
causing it to spill oil into the sea, au-
thorities said Sunday. State-run China
Central Television reported Sunday
evening that the tanker was still floating
and burning and that oil was visible.
Man dies in Stockholm after
picking up suspected grenade
HELSINKI – A man in Stockholm
picked up a suspected hand grenade
from the ground and it detonated in his
hand Sunday, killing him and injuring
his companion, Swedish police said.
The blast took place about 11 a.m. just
outside the Varby Gard subway station,
said regional police spokesman Sven-
Erik Olsson. Police said fragment dam-
age on the victims and findings at the
scene indicated the explosive could be a
hand grenade, possibly an old one.

The Cleveland Clinic, one of the na-
tion’s renowned hospitals, knew of at
least two cases in which one of its sur-
geons was accused of raping patients
but kept him on the staff while reaching
a confidential settlement, a USA TO-
DAY investigation has found.
Ryan Williams, a colorectal surgeon
accused in police reports by two wom-
en of anally raping them in 2008 and
2009, left Cleveland Clinic last summer
for another hospital, which placed him
on leave after learning of the com-
plaints.
The secret settlements criticized in
sex abuse and harassment cases from
Hollywood to Capitol Hill are frequent
in health care.
The scene in Williams’ office after an
alleged rape April 11, 2008, was nothing
short of pandemonium, according to a
report filed by the Westlake, Ohio, po-
lice department.
Patient Lachelle Duncan was receiv-
ing a rectal exam from Williams, the re-
port said, when she jumped up and ex-
claimed that the doctor had inserted his
penis in her rectum and that she saw
him holding it in his hand.
After she pressed charges, Duncan
got a rape kit, which along with other
lab tests proved inconclusive. A Cleve-
land Clinic spokeswoman said Wil-
liams took a polygraph, which was filed
as evidence to a grand jury. Williams
wasn’t prosecuted, but Duncan sued
Williams and the Cleveland Clinic,
which resulted in a confidential settle-
ment.
It is USA TODAY’s policy in most
cases not to name victims of alleged
sexual assault. But Duncan published
her name in a public lawsuit she filed
against Williams and the hospital.
Hospitals will often take over doc-
tors’ liability in confidential settle-
ments, which Washington plaintiffs’ at-
torney Patrick Malone calls a “frequent
dodge” to keep medical negligence
claims out of the National Practitioners

Merrimack, New Hampshire, is
$560 million richer after winning the
sixth-largest Powerball jackpot ever.
More than $1 billion in jackpots
could be claimed as soon as Monday af-
ter Mega Millions and Powerball each
had winners on back-to-back nights of
a historic lottery weekend.
Mega Millions kicked off the parade
of riches Friday night when the lottery’s

Kristin Fehr was sedated for a proce-
dure by Williams on Feb. 6, 2009. In Oc-
tober 2014, Fehr’s memories started to
come back.
Assuming she was the first — and
only — victim, Fehr said she wrote to
the Cleveland Clinic ombudsman. Fehr
said she thought if the hospital knew
about the accusations against Wil-
liams, it would just fire him.
Fehr went to the Westlake police
over what she thought was the slow
pace of the Cleveland Clinic police’s in-
vestigation.
By then, Duncan’s report and the
criminal case had been expunged.
Heather Phillips, a spokeswoman for
the Cleveland Clinic, said Williams left
the hospital for reasons unrelated to the
sexual assault allegations.
Williams was never charged with a
drawing resulted in one winning ticket,
sold in Florida, worth $450 million.
Twenty-four hours later, Powerball
upped the ante. The lottery announced
that one ticket sold in Merrimack, a
town of 25,000 people 50 miles north of
Boston, was the winner of that game’s
$560 million jackpot. It’s the eighth-
largest lottery prize in U.S. history.
“Can you believe someone just
walked into my store and won?” Safa
told USA TODAY on Sunday. “Most of
my customers are local, and I’m hoping
it’s someone local. But whoever it is,
congratulations to them.”
Safa, who has owned the store for 14
years, said he once sold a ticket worth
$250,000 and has sold a few worth
$100,000 — “but nothing like this.” He
said his store gets $75,000 for selling
Saturday’s winner. The store and Safa

crime. Prosecutors considered sending
the first case back to the grand jury with
Fehr’s case to improve the chance of an
indictment but decided against it, as
the cases would be separated at trial.
Williams moved last summer to Ohio
State University Wexner Medical Cen-
ter in Columbus. A day after USA TO-
DAY contacted OSU about Williams, he
was put on paid administrative leave.
Ohio’s statute of limitations for med-
ical malpractice or rape is one year. Fehr
has long since lost her chance to sue,
but not to talk about what happened,
which she is doing because Williams
still has his medical license.
“They went to great lengths to cover
it up, and there was just no way for
someone to be warned, to know what
could happen,” Fehr said. “They can
just make it completely disappear, and
that kind of environment, it almost en-
courages these kinds of crimes.”

also created a potentially deadly combination for fire-
fighters: more fires caused by space heaters or unat-
tended flames, and treacherous conditions that can
slow crews down when every second counts.
Fires last month in New York City alone killed 27
people, making it the city’s deadliest December in a
decade. That included 13 killed in a Dec. 29 blaze start-
ed by a toddler playing with stove burners. Another fire
in Brooklyn that killed a mother and three of her chil-
dren was started by candles from a Hanukkah meno-
rah. Firefighters battled blazes from New Jersey to
Louisiana as the cold continued.

Some lawmakers and county clerks have expressed

concern about the potential criminal charges that a
gun owner could face if they miss the deadline.
Also, it is up to county clerks to figure out who
should have recertified but did not.
“I understand there are many people who disagree
with and are frustrated with the NY SAFE Act,” Erie
County Clerk Mickey Kearns said in a statement.
“However, with the deadline for re-certification fast
approaching, I do not want to see any citizen lose their
pistol permit because they did not re-certify their li-
cense.”
State Police, however, offered no indication Friday
that the deadline would be delayed. Instead, it sent out
a statement reminding New Yorkers of the deadline.
“Recent changes to New York State Penal Law re-
quire license holders to recertify every five years. Indi-
viduals who were issued a Pistol /Revolver License be-
fore January 15, 2013, must recertify by January 31,
2018,” the statement read.
“The deadline to recertify for those issued a license
on or after January 15, 2013, is five years from the date
the license was issued.”
The process includes license holders confirming in-
formation about pistols that they own, updating per-
sonal information and affirming that they are legally
allowed to own firearms under state and federal law.

Garrison Holt Davidson Jr.

ITHACA - Garrison Holt Davidson Jr., 82, died on
Christmas Eve, December 24, 2017 in Ithaca after
a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Gary was born on December 12, 1935 in New-
burgh, New York to Lt. Gen. Garrison “Gar” Da-
vidson and Verone Greunther Davidson when
they were first stationed at West Point. The family
lived in many places over the years from Hawaii to
Washington D.C. At Cornell University, Gary was
a member of the varsity baseball team, Phi Delta
Theta, and Navy ROTC. Upon graduation, he served
in the Pentagon for two years. He married his first
wife Janet Toll and they settled in Los Angeles in 1959. He married Marjan
(Janie) Carasik in 2003.
Gary was a fantastic father to his children, always encouraging their interests
and sharing his own boyish enthusiasm for sports. He coached their Little
League and other sports teams. He touched the lives of many young people
who have now passed Gary’s unique legacy of kind fatherly instruction to
their own children. He taught them to win and lose with equal grace. Gary
continued his passion for athletics all his life. For many years, he joyfully
played on his adult sons’ slow pitch softball team on the dusty diamonds of
Los Angeles. He also played a great game of tennis into his later seventies.
Gary spent his working career as a financial auditor for several companies,
eventually retiring from Iron Mountain Records Management in 2003. He
was proud of his forty years of service as a board member of the Interna-
tional Institute of Los Angeles. This is a large organization dedicated to
helping refugees and immigrants get a good start and feel welcome in their
new country. Gary delighted in the community of St. Brendan’s Catholic
Church and the activities of its Men’s Club.
At his 45th Cornell reunion in 2003, he met classmate Marjan (Janie)
Carasik, who had been a widow for three years. She possessed the same kind
spirit, community values, and dedication to family that he did. For three
weeks Gary asked, “If I asked you to marry me, would you say yes?” Finally
her response came: “If I said yes, would you marry me?” That fall, Gary and
Janie were married in South Egremont, Massachusetts surrounded by all of
their children. Each was lovingly welcomed into the other’s family. Gary
delighted in reprising his role of doting grandfather with Janie’s grandchil-
dren. Gary often said,“I’m so glad we married when we were still so young!”
After spending four active, precious, and joyful years in South Egremont,
Janie and Gary moved to Kendal at Ithaca. Gary cherished his City Club
membership and the friends and activities at Kendal and beyond. He at-
tended weekly mass at St. Catherine of Siena parish almost without fail. He
was always welcomed warmly. Gary and Janie were likewise welcomed into
Temple Tikkun V’Or.
Gary’s health challenges became clear in 2010. Later in 2015, as his health
deteriorated further, he needed far more care than his wife could provide at
home. He moved to Cascadilla House and later to Owasco (both at Kendal)
Members of the Kendal staff were so able to see the human being as separate
from the disease. We are forever grateful for their gentle care.
Fr Joe Marcoux, Rabbi Walt and our children were at his bedside in Gary’s
last days, each bringing blessings, prayers and peace.
Gary is survived by his wife, Marjan Schneider Carasik, his children, Karen
(Jerry) Barnett, Garr Davidson, Greg (Helen Wilmot) Davidson, Jennifer
Davidson, his children acquired by marriage, Rimme (Jonathan) Buck,
Lauren (Christopher Norman) Carasik, and Michael Jaffe, as well as his
grandchildren, Michael and Evan Barnett, Jane and Catherine Davidson,
Rory and Tierna Davidson, Zoë and Alea Buck, and Emily, Maya, Anna,
and Elijah Norman. Gary is also survived by all his siblings, Tom (Connie)
Davidson, Alan “Skip” Davidson, Linda Hurst, Bonny (Ken Durell) David-
son, and Gail Davidson.
Our family welcomes your memories and stories about Gary and would
love to hear from you. He will be remembered by us as being steadfast and
rock solid. He always had a twinkle in his eye. He was one of the kindest
men we have known. Rabbi Brian Walt said it best: “He was such a good man
and it is so appropriate that he died on a day of such profound meaning to
him. His goodness was rooted in his Christian faith.”

ents to record his day and that
it would actually be “disruptive
and detrimental” to his educa-
tion.

of the Autistic Self Advocacy

ities Act requires schools make
accommodations unless doing
so would pose an undue burden
or fundamentally alter their

asking, for example, the school
to spend extra money or move

said.
“From what I’ve seen, there
wasn’t any showing that it was
an undue burden,” Kanter said.

parents could impact other
children in his situation, which

son why he and his wife have
been fighting this case for so
long.
“It has bothered us that the
district’s position has been that
we don’t necessarily have a
right to know what happens to
our son in school unless they
decide it’s important for us to
know,” Pollack said. “That’s
very disturbing.”

Abuse survivor can’t handle niece’s questions

Dear Amy: I am the youngest in my
family; my siblings are older by many
years. Years ago, I found out that my fa-
ther had a history of abusing girls. At a
family reunion, one of my older nieces
asked me about my father — apparently
she was one of his victims.
The reunion became an annual thing,
and she keeps trying to talk to me about
this, so this past year I simply did not go.
I cannot add anything to the conversa-
tion — I was a young child and knew
nothing of this. Plus, I was sexually mo-
lested by older relatives when I was a
child, so her questions just destroy me.
I have chosen to simply avoid the re-
unions, which are the only places I come
into contact with her, but do you have
any suggestions for me in coping with
this myself?
I have been to therapy, and have not
found it as useful as I had hoped.

Dear Burly: I am very sorry that you
and your family have to go through this.
You need to find someone you feel
comfortable talking to. If your current
therapist isn’t giving you the help you
need, and then ask for recommenda-
tions about other types of treatment.

support their important work. You can
connect online for communication and
support; they also sponsor in-person
“healing events” where male survivors
can learn from and lean on one another.
When you are ready, consider reach-
ing out to your niece through email or a
letter. Tell her that you understand why
she wants to talk about what happened,
but that you aren’t ready to discuss this
with her yet, and that if you ever are
ready to talk, you will let her know. Oth-
er abuse survivors in your family will
benefit from your wisdom and compas-
sion, when you are ready. Offering this
might help you, too.
Dear Amy: A few months ago, my
younger sister adopted a puppy. During
the first few weeks my 7-year-old
daughter and I would visit the pup at my
mother’s home. We quickly realized he
was not the friendly type. He has now
bitten me, my husband, my mother-in-
law, my grandmother and my daughter
TWICE.
The first few times we chalked it up to
him being afraid of new faces. But after
he bit my daughter in the face while she
sat in my lap on the couch — I have final-
ly had it. I have told my mother and sis-
ter that my daughter won’t visit while
the pup is outside of his kennel. Unfor-
tunately, this means no more weekly
visits to Grandma’s.
My daughter is too afraid to be
around this dog, and I don’t blame her.
I have asked my sister to crate the dog
when we visit, and she refuses.
She says she’ll just stay in her room
with him — knowing this will stress-out
my mother.
I can’t help but feel my mother’s bias
in all of this, as she advises me to bring
my daughter over with the pup roaming
around to “see how it goes.” Am I out of
line for not wanting to visit at all?

Dear Bitten: An often-quoted statis-
tic from the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) indicates that ap-
proximately 4.5 million Americans are
bitten by dogs each year. It is the re-
sponsibility of pet owners to do every-
thing possible to prevent incidents like
this. This dog should be taken to the vet
for a health check, and also enrolled in
obedience classes.
Unfortunately, you cannot force your
sister to be a responsible pet owner, and
so you have to continue being a respon-
sible parent. Keep insisting that the dog
be crated (or in another room with the
door closed) if you visit. Invite your
mother to your home.
Your sister needs to ponder: what
happens if the dog bites someone out-
side the family? Your sister could be
fined, sued or even arrested, and she
could be forced to surrender her dog.

Dear Annie: I am a middle child with
two elder brothers, a younger sister and
a younger brother. They all get together
and have dinner and movie dates or
hang out with one another. I am always
excluded. No phone call or text. They
have been rude and unwelcoming for
more than 15 years now. No idea why. I
have finally told them that I think they
have treated me poorly and I don’t con-
sider them brothers. My parents are
flabbergasted, as well. It has truly bro-
ken my heart. How do I let go? — Pushed

Dear Pushed Away: Before you let go,
let out your feelings. I know you men-
tioned that you told them what you think
— but was it in an angry and hurt way or
in an honest and gentle way? You don’t
get to choose your family, but you only
get one, so I am all for trying to work out
your differences. Feeling excluded never
feels good. The fact that your parents are
flabbergasted leads me to believe that
there is some serious communication is-
sue at play here. Seek out the help of a
professional family therapist who can
resolve this sibling misunderstanding.
Dear Annie: Your column about the
gossiping in-laws struck a chord with us.
Some folks resort to backbiting and ma-
licious gossip for vicarious excitement
and because they don’t have positive
self-images. My sister-in-law falls into
that category.
For many years, she seemed like a sis-
ter to me — only I eventually found out
the ugly rumors she had spread, about
me and many others. She even tried to
break up my marriage (to her brother) by
saying I’d had affairs all over the world
while on business trips.
I avoided her (we live out of state) for
several years but then confronted her di-
rectly in private during a family visit.
She cried and cried, apologized and said
she was ashamed. We will never be
close, but because she has advanced
cancer, I have forgiven her.
Malicious gossip is a stealthy type of
bullying, as your target is unaware of the
slander. I liked your advice to “Betrayed”
(to have her husband talk to his rela-
tives), Annie, but direct confrontation
shames the individual and puts the
power back where it belongs — with the
victim. If other family members don’t
like it, so be it. We can pick our friends,
but not family or in-laws. One would be
better off without them all than walking
on eggshells.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The upside
was this: The Bills made the playoffs,
ending their embarrassing 17-year
drought, so there’s no way anyone can
say 2017 was a disappointing season,
especially those who thought back in
August the franchise was tanking.
However, when you lose a playoff
game as Buffalo did Sunday afternoon,
and you lose it to a quarterback as inept
as Jacksonville’s Blake Bortles, sure,
you’re allowed to be a little aggravated.
In a game that redefined pathetic of-
fense, with both teams contributing to

Freshman goaltender Matthew Galajda
made 28 saves to lead the Cornell University
men’s hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Quinni-
piac on Saturday, securing a weekend home
sweep for the Big Red in ECAC Hockey play at
Lynah Rink.
The Big Red, ranked fourth in USAToday/
USA Hockey Magazine poll and fifth on US-
CHO.com, have won four straight games.
Behind Galajda, Cornell’s defense killed off
four Quinnipiac power plays, two of which
came in the opening seven minutes of the
game.
Trevor Yates scored the lone goal at 14:50 of
the second period off assists by Matt Nuttle and
Morgan Barron. It was his 11th goal of the season.
On Friday night at Lynah Rink, Cornell
cruised to a 7-1 victory over Princeton
It was the first time the Big Red scored seven
goals in a game since Feb. 16, 2008, when they
beat Rensselaer, 7-1.
Junior forward Anthony Angello, who fin-
ished with two goals, scored his first in the
opening five minutes to give the Big Red a 1-0

David Hallisey scored on a two-man advan-
tage to bring Princeton within 2-1, but Cornell
answered with three goals in a two-minute, 24-
second span and led 5-1 after the second inter-
mission.
Goaltender Hayden Stewart made 21 saves
and earned his first assist for the Big Red.
Cornell (13-2, 7-1 ECACH) travels to Yale for
an ECAC game at 7 p.m. Friday.
He’s right, it was a step in the right
direction as the Bills played their first
playoff game since 1999, but thanks to
yet another miserable performance by
one of the league’s worst offenses, an-
other drought remains active — Buffalo
hasn’t won a postseason game since
1995 and has now lost its last four.
For the sake of NFL fans, let’s hope this
is the worst game of this postseason be-
cause forcing anyone to watch another
one like it would be cruel and inhuman.

Saban, Alabama faces Georgia for title

and it just so happened that it was all
he needed.
The first six possessions of the
game ended in punts before Taylor
threw an interception in the second
quarter, a ball that went right through
tight end Logan Thomas’ arms and
into the hands of Aaron Colvin at the
Bills 35. Not that it mattered because
the Jaguars went backwards three
yards, and Doug Marrone punted from
the 38. Naturally.
The Bills finally put together an im-
pressive drive, but it ended with a loud,
irritating thud. Starting from their own
16, they converted three straight third
downs, got some help from two key
Jacksonville penalties, and then it all
started to go haywire as offensive coor-
dinator Rick Dennison lost his mind.
Buffalo failed to convert on second-
and-2 and then third-and-2 from the
4, and Sean McDermott called for a
field goal. The Jaguars, however, fool-
ishly jumped offsides so Buffalo had
first-and-goal at the 1.
On first down, Dennison called for a
fade pass to Kelvin Benjamin, and
Benjamin was nailed for pass interfer-
ence. You can guess the rest. The Bills
did not get the touchdown, and settled
for a Stephen Hauschka field goal with
1:49 to go in the half.
“It’s extremely tough, especially
when our offense was moving the ball,”
said guard Richie Incognito. “We have
to do better. We got down there and we
had a chance to get seven and we
kicked three. We had another drive go-
ing and got stuffed with a couple of
negative runs. It is frustrating.”
Jacksonville punted the ball right
back to the Bills, but it still had all three
of its timeouts, so the Bills needed to
make a first down to make sure the
Jaguars didn’t get the ball back. They
didn’t, and not only that, the Jaguars
had to use only one of their timeouts.
So, when Colton Schmidt shanked a
34-yard punt, Jacksonville was able to
move into position for a 44-yard Josh
Lambo field goal to tie the score.
After an exchange of third-quarter
punts, Jacksonville put together it’s
only big drive of the day, the one that
won the game. It was a 15-play, 86-yard
march that ended with Bortles throw-
ing a 1-yard touchdown pass to some-
one named Ben Koyack on fourth-and-
goal, a rare risky maneuver by Marrone
who bypassed a go-ahead field goal.
From there, the Jaguars defense
slammed the door as the Bills crossed
midfield only twice in the second half.
Buffalo had one last opportunity to
tie, taking possession at its own 37
with two minutes to go and no time-
outs. Taylor was hurt while scrambling
on third down when his head slammed
to the turf, delaying the game for sev-
eral minutes.
Rookie Nathan Peterman entered
facing a fourth-and-3 from the 44 with
1:17 to go and he scrambled for a first
down to the 48, then melted down as
he took an intentional grounding pen-
alty before throwing a game-ending
interception to Jalen Ramsey.
“It’s not the end result we wanted,
but it’s been such a tremendous ride
and it’s been so fun to battle with these
guys,” said Incognito. “I felt like
through the adversity we faced all year,
it drew this group tighter and guys
took it upon themselves and took it
personal. That’s how we are walking
out the door. People were saying we
weren’t going to win anything. I am
proud of the leaders on this team and
proud of the guys. We fought our butts
off to get here and it’s not satisfactory
just to get here and lose. We have a goal
set to win a playoff game.”

Bortles put together one decent drive
all day, doing as much with his legs as

Jacksonville Jaguars eked out an ugly
and sometimes unwatchable 10-3 vic-
tory against the Buffalo Bills in an AFC
wild-card game Sunday.

know they’ll have to win three consec-
utive road games to get a chance for Su-
per Bowl redemption.
The Falcons already nabbed the first
victory by spoiling a festive night in Los
Angeles, and they seem quite confident
about their chances to run the table in

Minneapolis.
Matt Ryan passed for 218 yards and
hit Julio Jones for an 8-yard touchdown
with 5:48 to play, and the defending NFC
champion Falcons advanced from the

The Canadian Football League’s
Hamilton Tiger-Cats bought them-
selves more time to negotiate with for-
mer NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel.
The CFL team issued a statement Sun-
day confirming that an offer was made
to the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner.
By doing so, the Tiger-Cats main-
tained his rights and prevented him
from becoming a free agent. The team
had 10 days to make an offer to the 25-
year-old Manziel, who remains on its

terviewed by the media on a frigid Sat-
urday morning.
Where Nizialek played the last three
years, this would’ve been a good turn-
out on game day.
“I would say this is probably more
people than I had at a Columbia game,”
Nizialek quipped, his eyes scanning
the crowd.
“By far, actually.”
Certainly, no one has taken a more
unlikely road to the national champi-
onship game.
Nizialek began his college career in
the Ivy League, where athletics most
definitely take a backseat to academ-
ics. After three seasons as Columbia’s
punter, he graduated with an econom-
ics degree that he hopes to eventually
put to use on Wall Street.
But first, he wanted to give big-time
football a try.
Georgia needed a punter and was
certainly impressed with the resume,
especially the part about leading the
Ivy League last season with a 44.8-
yard average. Knowing that punter
was one of the few positions where the
level of play shouldn’t be much of a
factor, coach Kirby Smart invited Ni-
zialek to walk on as a graduate trans-
fer.
Of course, there were lingering
doubts whether he’d be able to make
the big jump.
“We knew once he got here that he
was pretty good,” Smart said. “We just
didn’t know if he could do it under the
lights, in the big moment.”
Turns out, no moment was too big.
In what will be his lone season be-
tween the hedges, Nizialek essentially
matched his best season at Columbia,
averaging just under 44.9 yards per
punt, and his net average — factoring
in return yards — ranks fifth nationally
at nearly 42.3 yards.
In short, he’s become a key weapon
on special teams, creating big swings
in field position.

Nizialek remembers being a bit ner-
vous running out on the field for his first
game wearing a “G” on his helmet, with
93,000 people in the stands at Sanford
Stadium. But, after soaking it all in for a
few minutes, he got down to business.
Really, it was no different than punt-
ing at Columbia.
“It’s the same field, the same ball,”
Nizialek said. “Once you’re on the field,
you’re just focused on doing your job.
That’s not something I really ever got
nervous about.”
He never played before a crowd as
large as 13,000 in his three seasons at
Columbia — and wins were even harder
to come by than fans. The Lions went a
combined 5-25 over his career, includ-
ing an 0-10 campaign in 2014.
But Nizialek has no complaints about
the experience, especially given what
he accomplished in the classroom and
how that set him up for future success.
No one cheered louder that he did when
the Lions improved to 8-2 this season,
making a run at the Ivy League title.
“It’s really focused on academics,
and rightfully so,” he said, looking back
on his time with the Lions. “You really
can’t compare the two leagues. The fan

Jones caught nine passes for 94
yards for Atlanta, which never trailed
while winning playoff games in consec-
utive seasons for the first time in fran-
chise history. Against an opponent that
had just six players on its roster with

cons’ experience showed through.
“I think having gone through these
situations, understanding what it’s like,
the atmosphere, those kinds of things,
knowing that it’s going to be tough, all
those things kind of carry forward,”
Ryan said. “But at the end of the day, ex-
perience or no experience, you’ve got to
execute.”
A raucous crowd of 74,300 packed
the Coliseum on a crisp evening for the
first NFL playoff game in the nation’s
second-largest city since early 1994. Los
Angeles went 21 years without pro foot-
ball before the Rams returned last sea-
son, and the franchise emphatically
ended a 13-year streak of non-winning
seasons this fall with an inspiring run to
the Rams’ first division title since 2003.
Robert Woods caught nine passes for
142 yards, but rookie Cooper Kupp
scored the Rams’ only touchdown late in
the first half. Pro Bowl kick returner
Pharoh Cooper also muffed a punt and
fumbled a kickoff return early, leading
to 10 points for the Falcons.

If the pros don’t work out, landing a
job in the real work shouldn’t be a prob-
lem. Nizialek has already earned a sec-
ond degree during his brief time at Geor-
gia, a masters in sports management.
“I’ve graduated twice,” he said. “I’m
feeling pretty good about that.”
Tonight, there will be more than
76,000 people in the stands next door at
Mercedes-Benz Stadium when Georgia
(13-1) takes on Alabama (12-1) in an all-
Southeastern Conference title game.
No problem.
Nizialek has shown he can handle the
pressure over a memorable season that
has taken him from coast to coast. From
between the hedges to Touchdown Je-
sus. From the SEC championship game
to the Rose Bowl.

Erica Garner:
Rest in peace,
and justice
Erica Garner has died at the age of 27. The loss of
this remarkable young African-American woman is
incalculable. She was a tireless activist and a mother
of two; her death was attributed to an asthma-in-
duced heart attack four months after the birth of her
second child, her son, Eric. Erica, like her son, was
named after her father, Eric Garner, whose chokehold
death at the hands of the New York Police Depart-
ment on July 27, 2014, was captured on video and be-
came a flashpoint in the fight against police brutality,
further galvanizing the Black Lives Matter move-
ment. Erica worked tirelessly for justice for her fa-
ther.
“I can’t breathe.”
Those were the last words of Eric Garner, repeated
11 times on that July afternoon. Two weeks later, Mi-
chael Brown would be killed by a white police officer
on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri. Protests were

erupting all over the country. We flew back from Fer-
guson later that August, in order to cover a major
march in Staten Island, with over 1,000 people de-
manding justice for Eric Garner, the prosecution of
Daniel Pantaleo, the officer who was video-recorded
by a bystander putting Garner in the chokehold, and
an end to the NYPD’s systematic brutality that tar-
gets communities of color. We first met Erica Garner
there, standing at the very spot where her father had
been killed.
“My dad was a loving man, he was a humble man,
and he was a nice man,” Erica told us. “You could nev-
er get a ‘no’ out of him. He did whatever he could for
anybody who came around him. Anybody who came
around him was touched by his graces. Seeing the
videotape, I was very traumatized. I was very horri-
fied. It was horrible. Just seeing my father die on na-
tional TV was just horrible. I’ve got to live with this
forever.”
Erica was a loving daughter forced into the spot-
light by tragedy. She led twice-weekly marches from
the police precinct where her father’s killers still
worked, to the site of his death. She spoke out against
police brutality, appeared on panels and on televi-
sion. Erica Garner, living in one of the roughest hous-
ing projects in New York City, became a powerful
leader in the national movement to end police brutal-
ity.
Speaking on the Democracy Now! news hour two
years ago, Erica described the toll that a trauma like
the killing of a father takes on a family. “When you
deal with grief, when you talk about grief and you talk
about how regular families deal with it, you know,
families have problems, trouble coping with it.” She
went on, “Mental health is very important. … For
families that’s put in my position, black families
that’s on public assistance, that doesn’t have the in-
come to get therapy for $300 an hour, and I don’t
think that’s fair, and it’s not made for the black pop-
ulation, because how are we supposed to cope with
this if we don’t have someone to talk to, someone pro-
fessionally to talk to?” She ended by saying, “I’m con-
stantly reading articles and doing the research on my
dad’s case. But I’m not taking care of me.”
Early in 2016, she endorsed Bernie Sanders for
president, and appeared in a television ad: “This is
everything I have, my family. Family should be im-
portant to everyone. Mostly I like being a mother,” Er-
ica says. About her father, she says: “I’m just trying to
get the truth out there, to tell his side of the story. He
was being the loving, caring man that he was, and he
was murdered.” Leaked emails later revealed that
now-disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein be-
came alarmed at the power of the ad. Weinstein of-
fered to help Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager
Robby Mook strategize to counter Erica’s message.
Erica’s power was speaking from her own experi-
ence. She even considered running for Congress.
While New York City finally paid Eric Garner’s family
a settlement, Erica continued to fight for the release
of the full disciplinary records of Officer Pantaleo,
who remains on the New York police force. And to her
last breath, Erica also fought for federal civil-rights
charges to be brought against Pantaleo and the offi-
cers who killed her father.
In her Bernie Sanders ad, Erica said, “I’m never
giving up, I’m never going to forget, and I don’t want
the world to forget what happened to my dad.” Now
the onus is on all of us never to forget the passion, the
commitment, the life, of Erica Garner.

WASHINGTON – If karma is a b----, justice is a
beauty queen.
After recent revelations that the CEO of the Miss
America Organization and its pageant scriptwriter
were talking trash about past winners, the board fired
them both and installed Gretchen Carlson, a former
Miss America 1989 and Fox News anchor, as its new
chairwoman.
Carlson, you might say, was in the right place at the
right time — one she basically created. It isn’t exag-
geration to say that Carlson launched the ongoing an-
ti-harassment crusade when she sued her former
boss, Fox News founder Roger Ailes. He left the com-
pany, and Fox settled with Carlson for a rumored $20
million.
Next, Carlson wrote a book about her experience,
“Be Fierce,” which shined an even brighter light on the
frequent and largely ignored incidence of sexual ha-
rassment. Now she has been crowned again, this time
as the head of the organization that first put her on the
national map decades ago.
Although she didn’t technically start the #MeToo
movement that took over social media several months
ago, she should be credited with helping bestir wom-
en to find their voices. An idea needs mass and energy
to become a movement, and the purging of Fox’s mi-
sogynist man cave seems to have been the pebble that
caused the ripple that became the tsunami that led to
dozens (and still counting) of powerful men being
fired nationwide following accusations of sexual mis-
conduct.
With her recent anointment, Carlson has come full
circle in what must feel like justice for this Stanford
graduate and world-class violinist. Always confident
and a little bullheaded, by her own accounting, she
was an unlikely victim. But her experience at Fox and
her many interviews with other women helped her
discover a greater purpose. That such nasty disre-
spect toward women should surface, of all places, at
the Miss America Organization is alternately shock-
ing and juicy fruit for the tartly inclined. CEO Sam
Haskell and writer Lewis Friedman weren’t merely
disrespectful; they were disgusting. Also, one notes,
stupid.
It all started in 2014 with an email from Haskell to
Friedman about changing the telecast script: “I have
decided that when referring to a woman who was
once Miss America, we are no longer going to call
them Forever Miss Americas … please change all
script copy to reflect that they are Former Miss Amer-
icas!”

Friedman replied, “I’d already changed ‘Forevers’
to ‘C--ts.’ Does that work for you?”
“Perfect … bahahaha,” Haskell replied.
This is doubtless amusing to pageant haters, but
outrage from more than 50 former pageant winners
muffled the chortles of those who find such remarks
entertaining. These apparently included some of the
board members, who also have resigned. The emails
might have gone unnoticed — and, in fact, did for a
few years — were it not for the fact that several million
women are in a bad mood at the moment.
The irony is that feminists, including the #MeToo
cavalry, might be expected to rally alongside Carlson
and other Miss Americas to fight the boys-will-be-
boys excuse for sexual misconduct. But we’ve learned
from past episodes that many feminists suffer selec-
tive outrage. The rebuffing of Democratic Sen. Al
Franken, notwithstanding, they are hard-pressed to
align themselves with beauty queens, whose partici-
pation in contests involving a bikini strut and cultiva-
tion of an “ideal” woman (circa 1950) is viewed as a
symbolic obstacle in the battle for equality.

be everyone’s ideal of
womanhood, but whom
do they hurt?
Rallying the troops for Barbie is a hard sell as long
as she’s prancing around nearly naked before judges
who will decide whether she’s got the right stuffing.
Acknowledging this conflict of interests doesn’t
change the reality, however, that young women who
have put in the time, sweat and investment required
to compete in a national competition deserve at least
respect, especially from the organization that spon-
sors them.
The contestants may not be everyone’s ideal of
womanhood, but whom do they hurt? After nearly 100
years of pageants, there’s no record of a Miss America
posing a danger to society. Nor, one may rationally in-
fer, has any winner felt objectified by the $50,000
scholarship money.
So, she can’t be married while she holds the title.
Nor can she be pregnant. Are these restrictions really
so essential to full female autonomy? And, finally,
who cares?! The pageant is a tradition, for better or
worse. As an agnostic observer, I suspect that Carlson
will make it better and perhaps lead this archaic in-
stitution toward a female role model who more closely
resembles who we aspire to be.
