3. Briefly describe the motivation for starting this group.


Concerned Action Now (CAN) was started by a group of professionals in order to bring meaningful changes
in the lives of the most marginalised group of society, persons with disabilities, through research, advocacy
and rehabilitation.

4. Briefly describe the aims of your group.


Concerned Action Now (CAN) is an affirmative action organisation that promotes policies, programmes and
practices that guarantee equal opportunities for all individuals with disabilities so that they are empowered
to achieve self sufficiency, independence and inclusion in all aspects of civil society.

5. Does your group have any religious or political affiliation? If yes, please describe the type of affiliation
and the reason for it.

6. What non education-related community development activities is your group involved in?
CAN has been involved in community development work for disabled persons in two slums of Delhi -
Kusumpur Pahari in Vasant Vihar and Dakshinpuri for the last four years. As part of this programme, CAN
a) Is running vocational training centres where disabled persons are taught to make different things like jute
bags, glass paintings, greeting cards, paper folders etc. The main purpose of giving the training to these
children is to develop self confidence among them and to motivate them to become economicaly
independent.
b) organises awareness campaigns and sensitization workshops for the community
c) Helps the disabled persons to access services and facilities available for them.

We are giving them pre nursery education so that they can develop the right attitude towards education and
feel motivated to go to school.

10. Please tell us about your teaching techniques (conventional vs. alternative).
Since normal as well as disabled children come to the school, we have adopted both the techniiques. A
special educator comes as a resource person twice a week to impart education to children with special needs.

11. What is the literacy rate in the local community?


About 30 to 35%

12. Describe the socio-economic background of the children and their parents (e.g. education,
occupational). If any of your students are employed, please tell us about that as well.
On an average, the parents are semiliterate or illiterate, belong to lower class or lower middle class and are
working for private companies or are self employed and unemployed. A large number of mothers are
illiterate and work as domestic help.

13. In addition to education, does your group provide any other services to the children in your schools (e.g.
food, health care, clothing, etc.)?
Yes, we help them to get disability certificates. We also provide them with medical facilities by networking
with hospitals and clinics. We also engage them in recreational activities like indoor and outdoor sports and
visits to museums etc.

19. Do you help your students with their future education efforts after they have passed out of your
school?
Yes, we help them to get admission in a good school in the neighbourhood. We also keep in touch with
them ti insure that they do not drop out.

20. Are there any other schools (Kindergarten/Balwadi, Elementary school, High school) in the area? If
so, please list the schools and the range of classes each of them offers.
There are six other schools in the area These are Namki public school ( upto middle school) ; Durga
public school (play school); Seva Bharati (upto middle school) , Shahree Vikas Kendra (primary),
NDMC primary school, Senior secondary school.

21. Is your program different from that provided at these schools? Please explain.
Yes, because we are encouraging children with disabilities to come to our school and get education with
normal children. Our school will motivate the parents to send their children to normal schools after they
reach the school going age. This will also encourage inclusive education in the community.

22. Why are the children in your school/s not attending government/other schools in the local area?
They are under age for most of these schools. They will be sent to these schools after they reach the
enrolement age.

23. Do you try to involve the parents of the children in the running of the school (e.g. in setting the
syllabus etc.)? Please specify.
We conduct parents, teacher and coordinator meeting once a month to interact with parents, give them feed
back about their child's progress and note their suggestios.

24. What are your expansion plans for the future (e.g. adding more classes or schools)?
We have plans to increase the number of classes and children in each class; start other activities like craft
making and develop a prototype of Inclusive education in a slum. We want our own building in future so
that we can expand our activities.

25. Do you have any suggestions on how Asha can be a positive influence in changing the education
scenario in India?
By helping to improve the quality of education in the Government schools and supporting genuine efforts
made by individuals or NGOs to run educational institutions in order to complement the efforts of the
Government.
