WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY

Internship Memorandum of Understanding

The following statements constitute the understanding on which participation of the following student in the
Internship Program at Western Carolina University is based:

PLACEMENT AND EMPLOYMENT PROCEDURES

Western Carolina University and the cooperating employer agree to observe placement procedures and
employment practices which conform to all federal, state and local laws and regulations (including non-
discrimination toward any participant or employee because of race, color, religion, sex, veteran's status,
handicap, age, or national origin).

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CENTER FOR CAREER AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND


WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY

The University and the Center for Career and Professional Development agree to:

1. Provide the trainee with relevant university-related instruction and orientation.


2. Provide consultation and coordination services to the participants in the training program.
3. Be responsible for assigning grades at the end of each training period.
4. Recognize the cooperating employer's role and responsibility in supervising the student during
his/her placement and further understand that the university and the Center for Career and
Professional Development shall not operate in any fashion as a supervisor of the trainee during the
placement.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF COOPERATING EMPLOYER

The employer will recognize the student as a trainee and agree to:

1. Involve trainee with a meaningful work experience that provides added responsibility and/or variety
in successive internship terms.
2. Complete a performance evaluation on trainee at mid-term and the end of each training period.
3. Allow on-the-job visits (by appointment) by the Center for Career and Professional Development
staff (or other university representative) during the training period.
4. Agree to retain the student for the academic period in which he/she is placed, providing that he/she
is performing satisfactorily.
5. Notify the University Director at least two weeks before any action which might result in termination
or change of employment status.
6. If a student is injured on the job, he/she is covered by the employer's worker's compensation
policy. If so, what procedure/policy is followed. (If student is NOT COVERED please send letter to
Dean Paulk dspaulk@wcu.edu stating that this is the case for your organization.)
