2 Describe briefly the format of “schedule of rates “list and describe 5 items used in
landscape works.
The format of “schedule of rates “ is basically made in a table format which has 5 columns – Sl.No.,
description of items having heads and subheads; eg – masonry work, stone work , etc. and detailed
description of each item, Quantity of items, Unit of the respective items and their rates.

Rates taken in the DSR are indicative and actual rates shall be governed by the market forces.

The schedule of rates of civil work i.e hardscape, lighting, horticulture, water features, art work/sculpture
has been made separately. Every year or two, the schedule of rates is revised.

• Schedule of Rates, being published by C.P.W.D. is a very comprehensive document and useful in
execution of works.

• Schedule of Rates is used as a guide by a number of departments, public sector undertakings,

private sector builders and architects etc.

• The Central Public Works Department Schedule of Rates was first compiled in the year 1931,
followed by a number of revisions from time to time in order to bring it in line with the prevailing
technology and market rates.

• SoR is prepared by committee of civil engineers based on market rates appointed by the govt.

• The Delhi schedule of rates ,analysis of Rates and Specification(Horticulture and landscaping)was
released first time in 2014.DSR 2016 with the modification of DSR2014 was published on the
occasion of 162nd year of CPWD and it is published in both Hindi and English.

Importance of Schedule of rates

• For arriving at cost of any project two basic things are required:

1. Quantity of each and every item of work

2. prevailing market rates of each particular item.

• The quantities can be worked based on the drawings and specifications. The rates would however,
vary from place to place depending upon the rates of construction materials, labour, working
environment etc. SOR varies from state to state.

• The process of determining rate of any work in project like earthwork, concrete work, brickwork,
plastering, painting etc. is known as Analysis of Rates. The rates of these works further help in
determining cost of particular work and in turn cost of the project.

• In SoR details of rates of skilled labour, unskilled labour, materials and conveyance charges which
have to be adopted published from time to time.

• Rates are essential to calculate the estimated amount of work. The rates shall be adopted from the
approved and applicable schedule of rates.

• The rates in SoR changed every year as recommended by board of civil engineers based on
prevailing market rates.
• Example

• Rs 180 for unskilled labour per day, Rs.300 for II class mason per person per day

• Rs 80 per cubic meter of earth work excavation for trenches in loose soil

• Factors affecting work rates

• Specifications of works and material about their quality, proportion and constructional operation
method.

• Quantity of materials and their costs.

• Cost of labour and their wages.

• Location of site of work and the distances from source and conveyance charges.

• Overhead and establishment charges
