Project summary:

The National Park Service (NPS), in collaboration with the District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT), proposes to construct Section
3 of the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail (ART) through Anacostia Park. The purpose of the project is to provide a safe and convenient means for park
visitors to access between the Trail near Kenilworth Park and the National Arboretum. The recommended typical trail section consists of a 10‐foot
wide asphalt paved trail, with 5‐foot travel lanes in each direction. Traditional three‐way intersections are recommended to reduce the number of
conflict points and promote safe movements between pedestrians and bicyclists at the intersection.

The project features a proposed 390 foot, 4 span continuous span twin steel I‐girder bridge alternative over the Anacostia River. The new
pedestrian bridge will establish direct pedestrian and bicycle access between the US National Arboretum and the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail at
Kenilworth Park. The twin steel I‐girder system features a shallow depth, streamlined superstructure that carries the natural profile of the trail over
the Anacostia River. The reinforced concrete bridge piers consist of pile foundations and a flared pier system. Natural stone will adorn the recessed
faces of the river piers. Stone size, shape and color will closely emulate the existing seawall. Concrete stub abutments on pile foundations will be
installed minimizing excavation to avoid disturbing the existing landfill. Parallel abutment wing-walls will feature concrete treatments and natural
stone to match the pier design and the existing seawall. A modern curved post and cable style railing was selected to maximize views of the river
from the bridge.
