College students should have a one day off per week

Stressed are the college students nowadays more so when they are lacking of having a
rest day or day off. As a result, their academic performance decreases due to the fact that they
have not been getting enough rest to sustain the energy needed to get through the day. I believe
that a day off from school will be of help in improving students’ academic performance.

The first reason why students should have a day off from school is for the improvement
of their academic performance. To bolster this claim, in accordance to an article implementing a
5 day school week has many positive effects not only to students but also to school employees as
well. A research in Colorado said that students were performing higher than that of the national
average. Also, one Jimmy Linderman, a superintendent of Chattooga County School published
an article saying that student discipline referral decreased by 73% because students are well
rested and are unlikely to disrupt class. Facilitators also being able to perform well with the
decrease of stress, and helps them prepare more teaching materials.

Another reason would be that the increase of students’ focus and gives them a sense of
responsibility. Psychology Today, states that breaks restore ones motivation or energy and
enhances focus. In Seattle, a school who just adopted the 4 day school week said that it increased
the productivity of students and learn the importance of managing time wisely.

Some people believe that a 5 day week reduces the quality of learning. However, students
in Victor, Montana had a 4 day school week for a number of years but have seen no decrease in
their test scores. In addition, the Beach County School district in Georgia observed that the
graduation rates slowly increased a year after adopting the 4 day school week. Lastly, Oakridge
School in Oregon reported that its students’ test scores improve despite the fact of the adoption
of the said system.

The benefits that have been discussed are strong enough to pull through. A 5 day school
week gives a positive impact on students’ grades and overall performance. It seems fitting for
our school in adopting this kind of method because it can be beneficial for both students and
employees to increase productivity. Overall the benefit of a 5 day school week outweighs the
nonexistent interruptions in our academic performance.
