If the steam turbine is tripped it is essential to have a fast and
reliable quick stop function for protection of the turbine. The
CCI turbine quick stop valve, VQS, is designed for this pur-
pose. A mechanical spring is used for the emergency shut-
off. The closing time is typically less than 0.2 s for full
stroke. On request shorter closing time is available. The
emergency quick close function achieves maximum protec-
tion for the turbine. The valves are equipped with on-line
exercise capability that demonstrates freedom of movement
of tripping components without affecting steam flow.

The VQS valve is used together with the turbine flow control
valve VPC. The VPC valve is designed for regulating the
steam flow from start-up to full load. As an option the VPC
valve can be equipped with a quick closing function.

The low total pressure drop over the valves improves the
energy efficiency of the installation, thus improving the
power production.

Each valve is independently calculated and designed accord-

ing to the relevant operational conditions.

Common design
The valves are of angle type and are based on the well
proven stop valve type VS. The valve body, of fully
machined forged CrMo alloy or carbon steel, is designed to
minimize material stresses as well as to fit the requirements
of the the piping system with regard to material, pressure rat-
ing and piping connections.

The plug and stem assembly is made of a corrosion-resistant

alloy, which is surface treated to provide a sufficient hard- Fig 2 Sectional view of the VQS turbine
ness. The plug is guided in the bonnet that also is surface quick stop valve
treated.

A pressure seal bonnet design is used which is tight, safe and

easy to mount and remove.

The VQS design The VPC valve is designed to be regulated by a hydraulic
type actuator for steam flows from start-up to full load.
A CCI pending patent built-in strainer, an integrated part of
the bonnet, protects the tightening surfaces and the down-
stream equipment from dirt and particles. The strainer is Valve designation guide
manufactured with a great number of slots. Standard width of
slots is 0.8 mm/0.03 in, but can also be made according to Type of valve Plug Type of
customer requirements. A pressure recovery is made over the diameter plug
strainer. Due to the strainer design the pressure drop is less 93& PP %RU%7
than 0.6% of the inlet pressure. LQ
The outlet part of the stop valve has a pressure recovery cone
to minimize pressure drop. The total pressure drop over the
valve is less than 1.6% of the inlet pressure. The strainer
design also eliminates flow rotational forces acting on the
plug.

The VQS valve is designed with a pilot plug to minimize the

actuating force and the actuator size so that a very short clos-
ing time can be achieved. Emergency shut-off is performed
by a mechanical spring. The time for quick stop is 0.2 s for
full stroke.

As a safety feature the valve has a built-in test facility in

order to test the quick stop function during turbine operation.

The hard-faced seat is integrated with the valve body, thus

assuring tight shut-off. The valve is balanced tight and
designed for leakage class V (ANSI/FCI 70-2).

The VQS valve is designed to be opened by a hydraulic type

actuator.

The VPC design

The plug, a CCI pending patent, is of a combined cage and
contour plug design. The cage part for low flow and high Fig 4 Sectional view of the VPC turbine flow
pressure drop. Also reduced noise level and elimination of control valve equipped with the optional
actuator vibrations are achieved. The contour part of the plug quick closing function
is utilized for high flow and low pressure drop.

The outlet part of the flow control valve has a recovery cone
to minimize pressure drop. The pressure drop over the valve
in fully open position is less than 1% of the inlet pressure.

The VPC valve plug is designed to minimize the actuating

force and actuator size so that a very short closing time can
be achieved. The optional emergency shut-off is performed
by a mechanical spring. The time for quick closing by the
mechanical spring is 0.2 s for full stroke.

If equipped with the quick closing function the valve has, as

a safety feature, a built-in test facility in order to test the
quick closing function during turbine operation.

The hard-faced seat is integrated with the valve body, thus

assuring tight shut-off. The valve is balanced and designed
for leakage class III or IV. An optional design is available Fig 5 Modified linear valve characteristic.
