Early on in my retail career, I loathed the idea of
running sales. It was an admission of failure; it had
all the negatives associated with ‘discounted product’

I’m less naïve about my business now. I have come
to understand that products that sit on my shelves

to appreciate The Clearance Sale. While games do

A GAME OF THRONES: THE BOARD GAME
A Game of Thrones: The Board Game is a mechanically complex and dense
tabletop spin-off befitting the politically complex and dense land of Westeros
created by George R.R. Martin. Players control the houses of the Seven
Kingdoms as they vie for control of the Iron Throne, utilising both military
strength and diplomatic cunning to undermine their rivals. Succeeding
means planning ahead and knowing when and when not to trust your allies,
mixing social deducation aspects with wargame-like troop strategy as you
battle with fellow houses and wildlings. Like Martin’s novels, it’s a hefty
commitment – taking multiple hours to play – but is just as rewarding.

STAR TREK: FLEET CAPTAINS
The best Star Trek board game around, Fleet Captains takes place in the
sci-fi series’ Prime Universe, covering everything from the 1960s TV show
up to 2002 film Nemesis. This means that players can control commanders
from William Shatner’s James T. Kirk to Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard
from The Next Generation – or opt to side with the Klingons. Matches are
designed to play out like a season of the show, presenting and resolving multiple missions
as if individual episodes. The vessels can be upgraded and manoeuvred around space to
explore, complete objectives, build bases and fight – with multiple approaches to winning

TOUCH OF EVIL
Licence secured, it was time for Space Goat to fire up
the chainsaw, load up the shotgun and prove it was
groovy enough to face the Evil Dead. It was proved
right quickly. Very quickly. Within eight hours of
launching its Kickstarter for the Evil Dead 2 board
game, it had already destroyed its $70,000 (£57,547)
target. Fewer than two days later, it had more than
doubled its goal. By the time the campaign ended,
over ten times the initial amount had been raised,
netting Space Goat a cool $722,622 (£580,219) and
more than 6,000 early supporters.
“Kickstarter was a fantastic way to interact with the
community and allowed us to grow the game beyond
anything we could’ve done on our own,” Smith
effuses. “There were hurdles, but we gathered some
amazing fans along the way. The campaign itself
had us all working insane hours, overnighters, and
pretty much non-stop start to finish. In the end, it was
exhausting, but worth it.”
Like so many crowdfunding projects, the explosive
popularity of Evil Dead 2 opened the doors for
Smith and the Space Goat team to up the scale of
their original ideas for the game as backers chewed
through more than 20 stretch goals. This was
alongside the natural development of the title as its
mechanics were polished and refined before launch.
“Many of the mini-expansion add-ons, which
introduced extra play scenarios and mechanics, got
to grow well beyond our original intentions,” Smith
acknowledges. “As for the base game, the two biggest
change were the additions of a Deadite win condition
– Deadite players collect the same pages as the
humans, but for a different goal, so they have more to
work for than just killin’ – and the spell system, which
grew into a fuller mechanic while staying streamlined
in the rest of the game.”
With the project becoming one of Kickstarter’s
highest-funded board game campaigns to date, it’s
hard to imagine that Smith and Space Goat’s vision
was limited when it came to truly capturing the feel
of the movie. Instead, the designer insists that he was
forced to restrain himself – or risk drowning the title

While the tone of the game is
understandably softened, Cavatore notes that
the dice-driven systems required very little
changing to allow kids to understand the
central gameplay.
“As much as possible, I use the same dice
– all of the classic roleplaying dice – in the
same colours throughout [our games],”
he observes. “Terminator, Labyrinth and
My Little Pony use the same dice in the
same colours. There's a mechanic that kind
of ties them all together. There's definitely
a house style for River Horse which has to
do with that.
“We went for the colour-coding for two
reasons. Instead of telling a kid, an eight-
year-old, 'roll the D10,' you can say: 'Roll the
purple die.' The blue die is really strong, it's
the best, while the red die is the weakest.
That's the mechanic. It's an accessibility
thing and a simplicity to colour coding. The
reason the colours are the ones they are is
that they are elemental; they are what Plato
defines as the colours of the four elements,
plus extras.”
Avoiding the need to dumb down
roleplaying processes familiar to older RPG
players means that Tails can be played by
adults and children together – in fact,
it’s recommended.
“We often have boxes [in the rulebook]
which say 'For Grown-ups', where we tend to
give advice to the GM who we assume to be a

never describe any of his games
as the best he’s ever made
Interview by Matt Jarvis You've been making board games for more
than 30 years. During that time, what are
the biggest design changes you've seen?
The most important statement here is that the
games are a mirror of our time. They reflect our
time. Anything which happens in our world will
often be in our games. That means, of course,
a lot of the topics have changed because today
very different themes are relevant than they
were 20, 40, 50 years ago.
The dynamics of the games have changed a
lot. If you look at the classic games like chess,

today. Today we want to be in the middle of the

the various states of different games just come

a big observation. Our times change radically,

HOW TO PLAY
The game is played as a series of turns. First
the player moves his barbarian. Then the
monsters move. This sequence continues
until the game is decided.
To move the barbarian, the player rolls
two dice. The results of the dice determine
what moves the player can make. A roll of 2,
4 or 6, allows the barbarian to make a move
that many spaces in a straight line, while a
roll of 1, 3 or 5 allows the barbarian to make
a move that many spaces diagonally.
The player may choose to make his two
moves in whichever order he prefers, and in
whatever direction he desires, but he must
make both moves. The player must move
the barbarian the full number of spaces
listed on the die, unless he hits the edge of
the board, in which case he should end that
move immediately. If that was his first move,
he may still take his second.
If, during any part of a move, the barbarian
moves over a space containing a monster,
or if he ends a move in the same space as a
monster, that monster is killed and removed
from the game. The barbarian may kill
multiple monsters as part of the same move. If
there are no monsters remaining on the board
after the barbarian moves, the player has won.
After the barbarian has taken his moves, all
remaining monsters move one space closer
to the central square. Thus, monsters will
always move on a diagonal from their starting
square towards the central square. If this
move takes them onto a square containing
the barbarian, the barbarian is killed and the
game is automatically lost. If this move takes a
monster onto the central square, the victim has

POST-GAME THOUGHTS
Tim: Not having played a specific scenario
before and having only faced a huge ship
once previously I was looking forward to
this. It really did play out differently than
the 100-point organised play events that I
had been to before. It was a lot of fun and,
not having played X-Wing in a quite a while,
was thoroughly enjoyable. X-Wing really
does give you the feeling of the dogfights
that you see on the silver screen. It’s made
me think about perhaps playing more
X-Wing again, even attending an organised
play event. I’d definitely recommend some
of the scenarios to people as they add a
totally different perspective to this very
enjoyable tabletop game.

to base the habits on. It’s a literal MATT JARVIS their movement. Each location provides a specific power, such as The
Rover’s ability to access unexplored areas for the chance to pick up survival
cards, which have a number of useful effects.
The humans can discuss where they are going out loud, but it's best to avoid
it because the beast is on their tail and gets to select the location they will visit
afterwards. When the players’ cards are revealed, they activate any powers at
their location – except if the beast dwells there or has affected the region with
one of its hunt cards or tokens. If the beast lands on a player, the player loses
a will cube. Lose all three and the beast moves forward a space on the central
tracker board. Humans move forward at the end of each round, or when they
activate particular powers. The first team to reach the win space, wins.
It’s as simple as that, with the beast trying to second-guess the players’
movement, which becomes more limited as they use location cards to
move – having to spend will cubes or risk visiting the beast’s lair (where
being caught means losing an extra will) to pick up their discard pile.
The combined hand management and hidden movement mechanics
are smartly implemented, and the cards are beautifully illustrated, but
too often the game depends on wild guesswork on the part of the beast
player and discourages the human players from discussing their strategies,
resulting in a rock-paper-scissors approach to laying cards. A shame, as the
theme and appearance really are excellent. ■

respective vivid hues, which pop beautifully. The Classic sleeves are
glossy and smooth, and a tiny bit more transparent on the reverse than
the textured Matte sleeves, the blue of which is a slightly deeper shade.
Both sleeves seal nicely around standard-sized cards (such as those
used in Magic: The Gathering) with a tiny bit of wiggle room inside the
sleeves – Dragon Shield products have long been a notoriously tight fit
when double-sleeved, for better and worse.
Both sleeves are comfortable to pick up and shuffle, with the Matte
gaining an obvious advantage when it comes to grip – just watch for
collected finger grime in years to come. Meanwhile, the shiny Classic backs
are more prone to dinks and scratches, but that shouldn’t be a problem
when treated with the right amount of care. We also put both sleeves
through their paces when it comes to splitting, giving them a strenuous
amount of testing to simulate longer-term use and abuse; we’re happy
to say that both remained secure with no sign of the dreaded separation.
The overall premium quality of the sleeves is even reflected in their
boxes, constructed from sturdy thick card and illustrated on the front
with fantastic illustrations of dragons, whose biographies (‘Abigan
the Morose’ and ‘Arteris the Passion’) are written out on the back. The
tops of the boxes have blank lines for you to write labels and use the
packaging as extra deck storage, which is a nice touch. ■
