1. GENERAL
1.1 DESCRIPTION
The work specified in this section includes, but is not limited to, the furnishing and
installing of all required insulation for steam pipelines, flanges, separators,
vessels, valves and other fittings.
Contractor shall furnish all materials and labor required to complete the installation of
the insulation shown on the Contract drawings and as herein specified.
It is Contractor's responsibility to determine quantities of insulation materials required.
All insulation materials shall be capable of withstanding 260ºC temperature.
1.2 SUBMITTALS
Prior to performing work, the Contractor shall submit the following for approval:
Manufacturer's data which shows the proposed products to be suitable for the
intended use and as specified for at least the following:
Insulation material and jacketing.
Removable insulating covers.
Mastic and caulking material.
Description of Contractor's proposed sequence of operations and method of installing
at least the following:
Pipe insulation, aluminum jacket and fasteners.
Insulation of fittings and appurtenances.
Removable insulation covers, including details and dimensions of proposed
covers, and strap fastenings.
Samples of aluminum jacketing, stainless steel banding and removable insulation cover
fabric for color matching purposes.
2. PRODUCTS
PIPE JACKETING
Pipe Diameter Thickness (mm)
Aluminum
24" and Smaller 0.8
Larger Than 24" 1.0
Removable Box 1.0
2.2 SCREWS
Screws shall be stainless sheet metal screws, panhead Type A as manufactured by
Childers or approved equal.
2.3 BANDING
The banding straps shall be 19 mm wide, 0.50 mm thick stainless steel for all separators,
and pipe of sizes 16-inches in diameter and larger; and 13 mm wide, 0.40 mm
thick stainless steel for all pipe sizes smaller than 16-inches in diameter.
The banding straps for attaching the aluminum jacketing shall be stainless steel, painted
to match the color of the aluminum jacketing applied in accordance with 2.4,
Finishes.
2.4 FINISHES
The jacketing shall have factory applied paint coating of 10% gloss applied to a dry
film thickness of not less than 0.0381mm. Color shall match Sorik Maripi’s
requirements.
The jacketing will be subject to atmospheric contaminants found in the geothermal
environment at KS Orka Geothermal Project. The coating shall be formulated
to withstand such severe exposure at an elevation of 900 masl.
The coating may be one of the following:
Thermosetting Polyester or Acrylic paint.
Polyceram 320.
The Contractor shall guarantee the performance of the paint used for the aluminum
jacketing for a period of five (5) years. Should the coating crack, peal or
otherwise fail, within the specified time, the Contractor will be required to
repaint the affected areas.
3. EXECUTION
3.1 GENERAL
Contractor shall verify in the field all pertinent configurations and locations of pipeline
fittings, supports, brackets and appurtenances that may affect the fabrication of
the insulating materials.
It is intended that insulation be installed continuously over the facilities within the
limits of work so as to completely insulate them and prevent heat loss. Where
valves and flanges occur, the insulation shall be terminated with end caps.
3.2 INSTALLATION
Insulation Jacketing
Enerwrap 80 Mineral Wool on pipe shall be installed in 2 layers, for a total of
50 mm thick. Longitudinal seams for the bottom and top layer shall be
offset by 180°. Circumferential seams shall be set at the midpoint of the
other layer.
All voids shall be filled with comparable insulation material to afford a
continuous insulation covering.
The insulation shall fit tight around pipe supports and fittings. Care shall be
exercised to insure that seams at the Enerwrap 80 Mineral Wool
insulation are tight. Cut-outs in insulation for pipe shoes, pipe anchors,
drain and sampling ports, lifting eyes, laydown pads, rupture disks, tie-
ins and other pipeline irregularities shall be made not to exceed 2 mm
around the fitting or irregularity.
Insulation shall be taped, including at outside seams. Tension on the tape shall
ensure that no more than 13 mm of sag shall exist between the bottom of
the pipe and the insulation.
Install the insulating system one component at a time. The Enerwrap 80
Mineral Wool insulation and jacketing shall be installed as two
operations. The Enerwrap 80 Mineral Wool insulation shall not be
installed during wet weather and shall not be subjected to wet weather
between the installation of the Fiberglas and installation of the jacketing.
Open ends shall be sealed at the end of each workday. Contractor shall
utilize a method of installation that shall insure that the insulation does
not become wet. Wet insulation material shall be removed and replaced
by dry insulation at no additional cost to Owner. Insulation material,
which has become wet, shall not be reused.
Jacketing
The aluminum jacketing shall be installed during the same workday as the
installation of the Enerwrap 80 Mineral Wool insulation.
The jacketing shall be first pulled tight around the Enerwrap 80 Mineral Wool
insulation using temporary bands prior to installing the screws.
Longitudinal seams shall be hemmed, shall lap downward and shall have a
minimum lap of 40 mm; 80 mm for pipe larger than 24” diameter.
Longitudinal seams shall be positioned in the four or eight o'clock
position. Deviation shall not exceed five (5) degrees.
Longitudinal seams shall be located on the side of the pipe not normally viewed
or on the narrow side of the rights-of-way.
Longitudinal seams may be located at the bottom of the pipe at supports where
cutouts must be made to fit insulation and jacketing around supports.
Longitudinal seams shall be secured using stainless steel screws at 210 mm
maximum spacing.
The transverse circumferential seams shall have a minimum overlap of 80 mm,
shall lap in the direction of the pipe slope, and shall be secured using
stainless steel screws, 4 ea at 90° spacing for horizontal runs, or 210 mm
maximum on-center spacing for vertical runs.
Gaps at the aluminum jacketing shall not exceed 2 mm. Separations of "fish
mouths" shall be eliminated at the aluminum jacket seams by the use of
a hemmed design. This design consists of folding over approximately
13 mm of the overlapping seam 180 deg to give the overlapping seam
extra strength at its loose end.
Insulation terminations at flanges shall be set 460 mm from the adjacent flange
face to allow for bolt removal without insulation damage. The insulation
annulus shall be flashed with aluminum of the same thickness,
metallurgy and color as specified. The flashing shall lap the straight run
metal jacket not less than 50 mm. Flashing shall be screwed and caulked.
Caulking
Voids 1.5mm and less shall be caulked within ten (10) days of jacket
installation.
Voids greater than 2 mm shall be riveted with aluminum rivets to comply with
the 2 mm maximum and then caulked. To fill voids greater than 2 mm,
metal sections shall be attached with stainless steel screws.
Banding
Banding shall be installed one per pipe shoe and to hold down cables as
necessary.
