Serving Drills

Target Serve
- Students are to line up on one side of the badminton court
- Three hoops are placed on the other side at the back
of the area as targets
- One at a time, students serve the shuttlecock, aiming
to land it in the hoops
- Rotate through to ensure all students have a turn
- Placement of hoops can be changed to suit different
types of serves: high serve, low serve, flick serve
Progression
- Hoops can be worth a different number of points
- Student can be put in teams and aim to get as many points as possible
- Position of hoops can be changed to enable students to practice a short serve (closer to the
net)
KTP

- Weight transfer
- Follow through
- Aiming for the hoops

Run In
- Three students are positioned at the back of the court, with their back to the net
- Another student will be on the opposite side of the court with a pile of shuttles
- The three students will be numbered 1-3
- The serving student will serve a high serve, as they would use in a singles game
- As they serve it, they call out a number between 1 and 3. The student that is nominated as
that number will turn and run in to receive and return the serve
- Students are awarded a point if they can return the serve. The serving receives a point if the
students cannot return the serve
Progression

the serve
- Manipulate for different types of shots (smash, drive
etc.)
- Include short, low and flick serves

Service Four Corners

- Students begin in pairs; student 1 is the server and student 2 is the caller
- Depending on numbers, can be played on half or full court
- Each corner of the service box is labelled 1-4, giving 4
corners as targets (can place hoops in each corner if
needed)
- Student 2 is to call out a number between 1 and 4, with
student number 1 serving to that corner.
- 1 point is awarded for every serve landing in the correct
corner
- Once student 1 has had 4 serves, roles are switched with student 2 becoming the server.
- Ensure students are rotating through high, low and flick serves
Progression
- Make the server serve the shuttle continuously, one after another
- Have student 2 standing on the court and ready to return the serve and play out the point
- Increase to a larger group and have a student at each corner, returning the serve to the
server
KTPS
- Racquet goes from low to high
- Weight transfer
- Follow through
- Aiming for desired corner
