Chapter I

Introduction

A. Background of the study

A good study habit is very important for good academic performance, and such

every parent and teacher would desire their children to be eager and excited

readers. Therefore, it is very important to create attracting, inviting and comfortable

place for the students in order to help them developed good study habits. Library,

more than any other place, provides ideal environment and vital information

resources for students to develop and support good study habits necessary for

excellent performance in academic works. Thus, it is essential for the students to

improve good study habits that will supply them an excellent performance in their

academic work through the use of a school library. A habit is a regular tendency

or practice, especially one that is hard to give up. Alex (2011) described a habit as

something that is done on scheduled, regular and planned basis that is not lower

to a second place or optional place in one’s life. It was further stated that a habit is

what is simply done, no reservation, no excuses and no exceptions. Thus, the habit

formed can be improved upon by constant practice; and it is very hard to give up

a habit once it is formed. According to Alex (2011) to study is to buy out the time

and dedicate self to the application and task of study, and to become fascinate in

a process of learning, practice, knowledge and education of one’s self.

Therefore, study habit can be derived from the above as buying out a

dedicated schedule and uninterrupted time to apply one’s self to the task of

learning. Study habit is an action such as reading, taking notes, holding study

groups which the students perform regularly and habitually in order to accomplish

the task of learning. Study habits can be described as effective or ineffective

depending upon whether or not they serve the students well. Many of the issues

concerning success in school revolve around developing good study habits.

Reading habit refers to the behavior which expresses the likeness of reading of

individual types of reading and taste of reading (Busayo, 2011 cited in Sangkaeo,

1999). Parents can certainly play a major role in providing the encouragement,

environment, and materials necessary for successful studying to take place at

home. They are the one of the many reasons to motivate and inspire each and

every children in their study. However, at school, library provides a quiet, well-lit

study place and environment that is helpful to mental concentration. It was stated

further that library especially school libraries are desirable in order to promote into

the students very early in life the habit of reading for various purposes, education,

pleasure, information, culture etc. Students’ academic performance is predicated

on study and reading skills. Without good study and reading habits, students would

not be able to perform excellently in their tests and examinations. According to

Bakare (1994) as cited by Asikhia (2010) poor academic performance is any

performance that falls below a desired standard. Poor academic performance of

students in promotion examination or terminal examination will hinder the students

from being promoted to the next class or securing admission to higher institution

of learning. Poor academic performance can make the students to become

frustrated. It can also lead to students’ drop out.

B. Statement of the problem

This study aims to provide the researchers and future researchers on the same field

information on what are the impact of study habits on the academic performance of

Grade 11 ABM students in San Jose Litex Senior High School,

Specifically, this seeks to answer the following questions;

1. What is the demographic profile of the students when it comes to:

(a) Sex

(b) Time consumed of students in studying

(c) Social status

According to Palm Beach Community College (PBBC, 2008), they recommend

that student’s study should have at least three hours out of class for every hour spent

in class. They also said that a student must have a special place to study with plenty of

room to work. And students should not be cramped. They presupposes that study time

will go better if a learner take a few minutes at the start to straighten things up. A desk

and straight-backed chair is usually best. “ Don't get too comfortable--a bed is a place to

sleep, not to study” as what they said. A student must have everything close at hand

(book, pencils, paper, coffee, dictionary, computer, calculator, tape recorder, etc.)

before starting to study. Students are not suggested to spend on time jumping up and

down to get things. The PBCC suggests also that distracting noise should be

minimized however they said that there are some people need sound and some like

silence. In this case, a learner must finds what works for him or her. Culprits are family

and friends. consider a "do not disturb" sign and turning on your answering machine is

the way also to have better study habits according to the PBBC..

Frank Pogue(2000) did a research project to determine why

students fail. What he founds to be true in that study habits survey was that more

than 30 years ago still rings true today--students fail because they do not know

how to study .The best advice he can give is to develop sound study skills.

He said that a student should make sure that he/she has a good study

environment, a good desk, a sturdy chair, good light, comfortable room

temperature and a quiet atmosphere. That means he/she should eliminate all

external and internal distractions. Second, get a good overview of the

assignment before starting the work. Know what skills, facts and ideas that are

expected to master and the ground that are expected to cover. Start with most

difficult subject first, while the mind is freshest and most receptive.

Professors in the developing countries said that the undergraduate

students should be fully equip with high level of analytical skills, the capacity for

critical reasoning, self-reflection and conceptual grasp and ability to learn

autonomously and exercise flexibility of mind (Simmons 2003). Study habits are

said to be improving because of the advent and wide use of the Internet,

hypertext, and multimedia resources which greatly affects the Study Habits (Liu,

2005). Karim and Hassan (2006) also note the exponential growth digital

information, which changes the way students perceive studying and with printed

materials that are to be use in facilitating study. Liu (2005) and Ramirez (2003)

report that students print material from the Internet in order to study and read

later on. Igun (2005) also found that Nigerians study from materials downloaded

from the Internet.

Overall, study habit and skill measures improve prediction of

academic performance more than any other noncognitive individual difference

variable examined to date and should be regarded as the third pillar of academic

success.

According to the how-to-study.com (2009), students who are very

successful in their desired career have good study habits. It is stated in the

website that students apply these habits to all of their classes. The website also

recommends some tips in improving study habits. The website also suggests

that the student should try not to study all the subjects in just a period. The

website also added that if you try to do too much studying at one time, you will

tire and your studying will not be very effective. Space the work you have to do

over shorter periods of time. Taking short breaks will restore your mental

energy.

According to Mark Crilly (2000), Successful students are able to

balance social activities with good study habits. A diversion from studies will

alleviate stress and help prevent from becoming fatigued. He said that a student

should make sure that he must take a break for an hour after studies to meet

with friends, to play some cards, work out at the gym, or to gab with a new

acquaintance. For this way, that student will find concentration when he do

study, if he plans a social activity afterwards. He said, “To develop a healthy

social life, develop routine study habits. After supper, lug your books and

homework to the library, find a comfortable and quiet niche, and study for two or

three hours, taking intermittent 10 minute breaks every 45 minutes or so.”

Making friends with whom you share similar study habits, and share a table or a

study space with them would be a best way in developing study habits as what

Mark said.

CHAPTER III

Research Design

Methods of Research Used

Descriptive survey research was adopted for this study. The researchers used

questionnaire instrument for data collection. The population of this study consists of students from

four secondary schools. The researchers were from San Jose Litex Senior High School. The

researchers were well aware of how important education is so since as a students, this research

is conducted to know the impact of study habits on the academic performances of students.

Accordingly, this research will be in descriptive method. According to Burns and Grove

(2003:201), descriptive research “is designed to provide a picture of a situation as it naturally

happens”. It may be used to justify current practice and make judgment and also to develop
San Jose Litex Senior High School

theories. Descriptive research involves gathering data that describe events and then organizes,

tabulates, depicts, and describes the data collection (Glass & Hopkins, 1984). It often uses visual

aids such as graphs and charts to aid the reader in understanding the data distribution. Descriptive

studies are aimed at finding out "what is," so observational and survey methods are frequently

used to collect descriptive data (Borg & Gall, 1989). Descriptive studies report summary data such

as measures of central tendency including the mean, median, mode, deviance from the mean,

variation, percentage, and correlation between variables. Survey research commonly includes

that type of measurement, but often goes beyond the descriptive statistics in order to draw

inferences. Descriptive research is unique in the number of variables employed. Like other types

of research, descriptive research can include multiple variables for analysis, yet unlike other

methods, it requires only one variable (Borg & Gall, 1989). According to Calderon (2008), as cited

by Alberto et al (2011), Descriptive method is also known as statistical research, it describes data

and characteristics about the population or phenomenon being studied. This research method is

used for frequencies, averages and other statistical calculations. And according to Manuel and

Medel (1976), descriptive research described “what traits” or “what it is” about a certain

educational phenomenon. Accurate observation and assessment arise from the date ascertain

the nature and incidence the prevailing condition, practices, and persons who are objects of the

descriptive research. It studies conditions as they exists. Sources of data The researchers

conducted a study at San Jose Litex Senior High School. The researchers decided to have 40

respondents. 20 randomly selected students from the population of boys and for girls as well as

from the strand ABM who are currently enrolled for the year 2018 - 2019. Random sampling

method is used. A uniform survey sheet was specifically used for all the respondents and was

distributed for the selected students of grade level 11.
