Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: What’s your favorite season?

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 3rd grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE3.MD.3. Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to
represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less”
problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs.

Technology Standard Addressed: 4 Innovative Designer

Selected Technology Tool: Excel

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☒ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): UDL is addressed in this lesson, because every student is able to express
their creativity in creating a bar graph. Also, students they need support can be assisted by using Big Keys,
zooming the size of the text on the computer screen, and creating the bar graph on touch technology. This
lesson provides every student with a chance to learn and understand the math content.
Engagement: The students are engaged by creating a bar graph of the different seasons and collaborating
with their classmates to create a picture graph.
Representation: The students are using representation by displaying information using Excel.
Action and Expression: The students are using action and expression by using Excel to construct a graph and
communicating with their classmates and teacher about the graph.

Lesson idea implementation:

In this lesson, the students will be engaging in math, by creating a bar graph. The teacher will begin this lesson
by introducing the concept of picture graphs and bar graphs. The teacher will explain to the students that
picture and bar graphs displays data that can be analyzed compared. After, the teacher will show the students
examples of bar and picture graphs and ask them the questions “how many more?” and “how many less”.
Next, the teacher will explain to them that they will be creating a bar graph on Excel. The data they will collect
will be each student’s favorite season of the year. This lesson may take two days to complete, due to limited
time.
The students will use the data of the classroom to create a bar graph on the favorite seasons of each student
in the classroom. They will be able to explore their options of making the graph 2D or 3D, choosing the color
of each bar on the graph, fonts, etc. After creating the graph, the teacher will provide each student with “how
many more” and “how many less” questions about the graph. This will assess what the students have learned
and if they are able to solve problems using information on a graph. After, the teacher will extend their
learning, by having the class come together as a large group and having them construct a picture graph of the
data. The teacher will provide feedback to each individual student on their bar graph, and their answers to
the math questions.

Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
I feel that this lesson has a great impact on student learning. It teaches students how compare and contrast
data, while also teaching them math skills. Also, this lesson will teach students how to use Excel for the
future. To further extend this lesson, I could provide the students with data on favorite seasons of each class
in the 3rd grade and create a larger graph to display outside of the classroom.
