Equivalent Height For Surcharge Get help o

Engineerin
Surcharge is a type of loading that acts over the footing and the retaining wall. Surcharge may be coming on the soil from a dead Chegg Stu
load or live load. The surcharge dead load acts in the form of immovable objects like soil mass, highway, trees, etc and the live load

acts in the form of men and vehicles used for transportation etc. Answ

Formula to calculate the effective height of the surcharge is as given below. Find

Retaining wall:

Consider a cantilever retaining wall retaining a soil mass and acted upon by surcharge as shown in the below gure. Find out the
effective height of the surcharge for this case.
In the retaining wall, vertical back ll or soil mass acts along with surcharge for retaining wall. Assume that term H is the height of
the back ll, q is the intensity of surcharge and γ is the unit weight of the back ll soil.

Calculate the effective height in terms of the lateral stress exerted by the surcharge over the wall in terms of unit weight of soil.

Here, the term ka is the active earth pressure coefficient for the back ll.
