Activity: 4.1 Separating the components of a

mixture.
Aim : 1. To separate a mixture of iron fillings
and sulphur powder.

2. To separate a mixture of sand and

salt.

Procedure:
1. Some iron fillings and sulphur powder is
mixed in a beaker.
2. A magnet is held near the mixture.

Result and Observation

From the observation I found that the

Questions:
1. Which substances is attracted by magnet?

_______.
2. Can the magnet separate the mixture?

_______.
Discussion:
The ______________ was attracted by

Conclusion:
The ___________ can be ____________ by
using the magnet.
b. Separate a mixture of sand and
salt.

Diagram : figure 4.2

Procedure:
1. The mixture of salt and sand is mixed with
some water to dissolve the salt.

2. The sand and salt is separated by using

the following steps:

a. A filter paper is folded into a cone

(figure 4.2).

b. The filter paper is wet before putting it

into the filter funnel. The filter paper is
pressed against the surface of the filter
funnel so that it can stick properly.

c. The mixture is poured into the filter

funnel with the help of filter funnel with
the help of glass rod.
d. The liquid that flows is collected out of
the filter funnel in a beaker.

3. Some of the liquid is poured into an

evaporating dish.
4. The salt solution is heated slowly using the
Bunsen burner.

5. The report is written in my science report

book.

Observation:
1. The salt in the mixture dissolved in the
water.
2. The sand is left on the filter paper.
3. When all the water evaporated, salt was
seen in the evaporating dish.

Conclusion:
A mixture of sand and salt can be separated by
dissolving the salt in water followed by filtration
to obtain the sand and then, evaporation to
obtain the salt.
Discussion:
1. Why as water poured into the mixture?
To dissolve the salt.

2. Name the method used to separate the

sand from the salt solution.
Filtration

3. Name the method used to obtain salt from

the salt solution.
Evaporation

4. Suggest one method of separating iron

5. \ filings from a mixture of iron filings

and
sand.
Use a magnet to attract the iron filings from
the mixture.
5. How can chalk be separated from a
suspension of chalk and water?
By filtration
Notes:
Methods of separating components of mixtures
1. Filtration (separate insoluble solids and
liquids)
- chalk and water suspension
(water and chalk)

2. Evaporation (separate dissolved solids in a

liquid)
- salt solution (salt and water vapour)

3. Distillation (separate solvent and solute in

a solution)
-sea water (distilled water and salt)

4. Fractional distillation (separate components

in a liquid mixture)
- Crude oil (petroleum gas, petrol, kerosene,

diesel, lubricating oil)

5. Separating funnel (separate two insoluble

liquids of different densities)
- Petrol and water ( petrol and water)

6. Crystallisation (separate soluble crystals in a

liquid)
- Copper(II) sulphate solution ( Copper(II)
sulphate crystals)
7. Chromatography (separate components in
dyes)
- ink (different cloloured components)
