ABSTRACT

Hydro electricity is the largest source of renewable energy. In the present days mega
hydroelectric power stations have more limitations, because of environmental changeability
and the cost of construction plays a vital role in these projects. Micro hydro systems are
generally used in developing countries to provide electricity to isolated communities or rural
villages where electricity grid is not available. Feeding back into the national grid when
electricity production is in surplus is also evident in some cases. The micro hydro scheme
design can be approached as per household basis or at the village level often involving local
materials and labour. In view of this an attempt is made to locate the water source and
investigations are carried out to install a micro hydroelectric power generation station at
Kappadi, Baindur, Kundapura Taluk, North Kannada District, Karnataka State. In Kappadi
there is a weir constructed by Government Department across a stream for diversion and
storage of water for irrigation during rainy season. After carrying out investigations it is
decided to provide bulb turbine in the present site. From the results it is found that with the
available head of 3.18 m, the expected power generation is 13.79 Kw. Which is more sufficient
to supply the needs of 17 houses near to the site for 5 months in monsoon season.
