a) Founded in 1935 as a separate 501c(3) from the Metropolitan Opera, the Metropolitan Opera
Guild has become one of the world’s premier arts education organizations dedicated to enriching
people’s lives through the magic and artistry of opera. The Guild provides an innovative network
of arts education programs, including year-long arts education residencies in schools. In the
2017-2018 academic year, The Guild’s three school residency programs served 20 NYC public
schools, 125 classrooms, 138 teachers, and 2,716 students. Detailed residency program

• Describe your proposed partner’s specific experience delivering arts education services for
ELLs and/or SWD (1,000 characters with spaces, max)

All of The Guild’s residencies are based on a partnership model, and because their teaching artist
works closely in partnership alongside the classroom teacher, this program lends itself well for
special learners. Additionally, The Guild spends a great amount of time developing teaching
artist staff in areas of accommodation and universal learning design. In District 15 in Brooklyn,
the Guild is currently servicing three schools: P.S. 10K, P.S. 32K, and P.S. 58K. P.S. 10 and P.S.
32 each average about 24% special learners with most students falling somewhere on the autism
spectrum. The Guild also provides services at P.S. 373R, a District 75 school for students with
behavior challenges. They service several dual-language classrooms in various projects and
employ several bilingual Teaching Artists.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In partnership with The Metropolitan Opera Guild, The Little Brooklyn Pre-K Center is
proposing an 18-week ​Students Compose Opera​ (SCO) residency. SCO is an interdisciplinary
arts learning program in which students create an original opera based on a short story, poem, or
historical event from their class curriculum. A Guild Teaching Artist works alongside classroom
teachers to ensure that students benefit artistically and academically. Students are involved in all
aspects of the production: they write and compose the score and libretto (script), help with
staging, set and costume design, and perform the finished product for their school and
community. Through these processes, students are engaged in new arts learning and exploring
other more traditional learning through innovative means.

Given the diversity of art forms and skill sets used when creating opera, this residency will
engage and enhance achievement for our entire student population, in particular, our high
population of ELLs. Creating a script, singing, and working together with peers and teachers will
allow our ELLs to practice their language skills in an imaginative and fun way that is ideal for
young learners.

Goals for our SCO project will be determined collaboratively by the teaching artist and
classroom teachers from a list of learning goals based in five major areas: Arts Learning, Opera
Knowledge and Appreciation, Meta-Cognitive Skills, Socio-Personal Skills and Literacy Skills.
SCO’s program goals are based on several existing models/standards of arts education, including
the current National Core Standards and the five strands of learning from both the Music and
Theater ​Blueprints for Teaching and Learning in the Arts​. Teaching Artists make every effort to
enable students to achieve the established grade-level benchmarks from the Blueprint. Classroom
teachers will also have access to instructional resources and materials from The Guild, including
streaming access to video and audio from The Metropolitan Opera stage.
Our school philosophy is that young children learn best when given an opportunity to discover
and explore the world around them. Cognitive and language development for young children
begins with sparking a curiosity, exploring and interacting with peers as well as adults. Social
interactions and imaginative play provide opportunities for children to discover, communicate
ideas and make meaning. The SCO project aligns perfectly with our school philosophy. By
creating an original and student-driven opera under the guidance of Teaching Artists and
classroom teachers, our pre-K students will make connections between the arts and their
classroom curriculum, sparking a lifelong interest in learning and the arts. Additionally, many of
our students will have opportunities to continue working with The Metropolitan Opera Guild at
their future elementary schools due to existing partnerships between The Guild and several
District 15 schools.

a) The Little Brooklyn Pre-K Center is a small school with three to six classrooms at each of our
locations. Our 11 Pre-K classes include one dual language Chinese class, one dual language
Spanish class, and two SCIS classes (Special Class in an Integrated Setting). All students at all
three locations, including ELLs and SWD, will participate in the Metropolitan Opera Guild
program. We feel that all students will benefit from the opportunity to work creatively with
Guild Artists, learning through a range of art disciplines, while also exercising teamwork and
problem-solving.
b) Thoughtful scheduling of weekly sessions will ensure that all students have the opportunity to
participate in the program, which will take place during the school day. Our proposed residency
is for weekly 30-minute visits from Guild Artists with each of our 11 classrooms for 18 weeks.
30-minute sessions are ideal for our Pre-K students.

c) All classes have 18 students; SCIS classes have 10 general education students and eight
special education students. All classes have one classroom teacher and one paraprofessional
except for SCIS classes which have two classroom teachers and two paraprofessionals. If
needed, special education students are partnered with additional paraprofessionals. Our teacher
to student ratio will ensure that all students have adequate support during instructional time to
guarantee meaningful engagement and participation with Guild Artists.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT
• How will you ensure your project is carried out as proposed? Ensure you discuss:
a) Which school-based staff will be involved in project monitoring and implementation
b) How you will facilitate co-planning between school staff and the arts partner
c) Your strategy to track and ensure student and family participation
d) Plan to document and evaluate the project’s success and challenges

a) Each of our sites has at least one full-time arts teacher who will monitor and assist Guild
Artists in implementing our program in order to ensure that it is carried out as planned.
Classroom teachers and paraprofessionals will act as co-teachers to directly support Guild Artists
during weekly instruction with students.

b) Co-planning is facilitated via at least one initial site-based project-planning meeting between
the Teaching Artist, Guild Program Manager, and the school partnership team identified above.
This initial planning meeting is typically where the source material for the libretto is chosen or
discussed and program goals are developed. Following the meeting, the teaching artist is
required to submit a long-range curriculum map and weekly lesson plans to the partnership team
via email. Weekly lesson plans are sent in advance to give the school team an opportunity to
collaborate and/or prepare for the Teaching Artist’s visit. The Guild Program Manager is always
available for curriculum consultation and acquiring resources and materials for the project.

c) Our program will be scheduled during the school day to ensure that all students have the
opportunity to participate. Performances will be scheduled with consideration of the needs of our
families to ensure maximum attendance. Each location has adequate space to accommodate this
program including large classrooms, exercise rooms, and additional space for meetings.
d) Teaching Artists are required to submit bi-weekly reports to the Guild Program Manager of
the progress of the project. These reports include time attended, students taught, any challenges
or issues that arose, and complete lesson plans. Teaching Artists are also required to produce
three “artifacts of student learning” at the end of the project that illustrate achievement within
specific learning goals from the project curriculum. The school partnership team completes a
series of program evaluations at the end of the residency.

PROJECT FUNDING

The Metropolitan Opera Guild Teaching Artist is paid at an hourly rate for instruction and for
documentation. Additionally, the Teaching Artist is paid stipends for required planning meetings.
Therefore costs for this project have been estimated as follows:
